Issue with eye (eyelid?) When to worry?

Since Sunday, one eye has felt tender and appears to have a bit of swelling. It's subtle with a bit more of that eye being covered by my upper eyelid.

There's no external signs like redness or dry skin and the pain, when I press on it, seems to be on my eyelid. Although there's no pain when I don't touch it, as I go about my day I'm aware of it feeling not right and I'm feeling like I need to rest and close my eyes during the day, moreso as the day goes on.

DH said it sounds like a stye. I can't see anything but could I have a stye under the upper lid which I can't see?

The pharmacy can give you eye ointment. Worth popping in.

It sounds like a stye to me too, I get them under my eyelid or in the inner corner on my upper eyelid, usually when I'm run down and under the weather. You can get drops for them, visit your pharmacy, they'll give you something to put in your eye for it.

So it's possible to have a stye under the upper lid and not be able to see it?

Could be chalazion which can be deeper in the eyelid- enlargement of an oil gland- rather than a stye, which might explain why you can't see anything. Google it.

Could be blepharitits. Is there any discharge from the eye?

bookmarket · 18/01/2023 07:45

No discharge from the eye.

Off to Google chalazion

When did you last change your mascara? I had issues a while ago but it turned out to be that I was allergic to the new mascara I had!

Definitely worth going to see a pharmacist about it, they gave me some stuff that fixed mine.

Thanks. I'm not working today so I will go and see a pharmacist.

I've not used any new products recently except a new shampoo bar. But then I'd expect it to impact the other eye too - and I've never reacted to such things in the past.

My only reason for being a bit more worried about my eye is that I had headaches all last week. Albeit nothing sinister - they felt like regular tension headaches. I work from home and have been extra busy so more time stressed and using a computer screen and not much time outside. I put it down to that. Headaches were on both sides of my head, so not just on the side where the eye is now sore.

Do you have a fever and feel unwell? If not, it's most likely to be a stye under the lid which is caused by a blockage in the fat glands in the eye. You need to apply hot compresses and encourage the blockage to discard

Instructions here:
Treatment
The first stage of treatment involves
using a warm compress and massaging
your eyelid:
ï‚· Warm compress: Boil some
water and let it cool a little or use
water from the hot tap. Soak
cotton wool or a clean flannel in
the warm (but not boiling) water,
squeeze it out and gently press
onto your closed eyelids for two to
three minutes at a time.
ï‚· Massage: Starting at the skin
crease, gently massage the upper
lid downwards to the lashes. The
lower lid should be massaged
upwards towards the lashes.

If you do have/develop a fever, or the area of redness increases significantly, you need to go and see your GP for some antibiotics as you may have a periorbital cellutitis (which is generally very mild in adults, but needs treating).

Quick update incase anyone searches this topic in future. I was feeling well - no fever or other symptoms, so ruled out needing immediate medical attention. A warm compress gave some relief and it felt a bit better each day and went by itself.

Thanks everyone.
