Blood when I poo

Iamnotausername · 17/01/2023 09:07

So I'm going to be one of THOSE people and also TMI.

I've been constipated for a few days. Probably due to my diet and not too bothersome tbh. I will be getting something for it today though.

I have a pile or a big skin tag that has been there years and generally doesn't bother me but can get a bit irritated and leave a tiny bit of blood on the tissue.

Yesterday and today I've managed to have a poo. There was quite a bit of bright red blood. Yesterday I had a fart on the toilet and there was light blood splatter all over the bowl. This morning there was also a smallish blood clot on the tissue.

I'm only bleeding when I poo. Apart from the constipation, I have no other issues.

It's not uncommon for my poo to be muscus-y or the colour or texture to vary so that's not a very useful sign.

The amount of blood and the clot has worried me though.

I can't get a doctors appointment today and am not allowed to book one for in the future (ridiculous!). I've got work things for the next week which mean I can't book an appointment on the day. 111 haven't been very helpful in the past. No practical walk in centre.

So basically... should I

  1. wait it out for a few days because it's only been 2 days, 1 clot and I have no other issues?
  1. phone my GP and kick up a fuss until I get an appointment?

Nb: I am not slagging of NHS staff and I wouldn't be rude. They do a good job and are doing their best.

Don't wait.

It could be nothing serious. I occasionally have blood too. I have been diagnosed with IBS and had blood tests to rule other things out.

AmberGer · 17/01/2023 09:14

Sorry having troubles with my phone 🙄

ArianahX · 17/01/2023 09:20

Go into your gp surgery and explain.

Mindymomo · 17/01/2023 09:24

You are going to bleed if you have piles or anal fissure when you poo. What helps me is I take magnesium tablet everyday this helps me go regular and you need to up your fibre to go more. I have suffered with piles for a few years and have seen GP just to check, she didn’t refer me, but when my DH went with piles he was referred and after colonoscopy he was given botox for his anal fissure, which has helped, but not entirely cured it as he sometimes still has bright red blood when he goes. Only your GP can decide if anything needs investigation.

I have the same issue and have for years, it ended up being internal haemorrhoids. I think if the blood is bright red it's usually caused by a pile. Would they be able to just offer you a phone appointment so they can arrange a stool sample? That's usually the easier way to rule out anything sinister x

AnnaMagnani · 17/01/2023 09:34

It's overwhlemingly likely to be piles, given you were constipated and have a skin tag. Plus bright red blood not mixed in the poo.

You need to see your GP but not an emergency appointment.

SauteBaconHollow · 17/01/2023 09:40

We can't possibly give you medical advice on Mumsnet @Iamnotausername, you could purchase a bowel cancer test kit from Boots as an interim measure whilst waiting for a doctors appointment.

But do see your doctor - likely to be piles imo.

MaverickGooseGoose · 17/01/2023 09:53

You need to see a doctor, likely piles or I have a horrible skin tag that bleeds sometimes but you def need to get checked.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 17/01/2023 09:56

I would try to get an appointment sooner that later. My doctor didn’t mess about when I had something similar, red blood after wiping, loose stools with mucus. I also noticed blood in the poo. It was in 2018 though, so before the issues now with NHS, I managed to get a same day appointment. The doctor as very thorough, palpated my stomach, a rectal examination and the usual temp, bp and listened to my heart and lungs and blood tests, after the blood test results came back he checked my VitB 12 as my blood cells were an odd shape. He did a two-week urgent referral for a colonoscopy.
This showed internal piles which caused the bleeding. I’ve still got the piles and odd shaped Blood cells, my vitamin B levels are borderline, not low enough to need medication but still need keeping an eye on.

I'm now in A&E. I started bleeding constantly. Not loads but enough to have to have to put on a sanitary pad. It's in the wrong place and very uncomfortable. Screen says 7hr wait but hopefully the fact that I'm actually loosing blood means it won't that long. I'm not joking when I say there is a couple who have bought a picnic basket! I wish I was that organised and that I had shaved my legs. I need to save my battery so won't be posting again. I'm not going to google. Thanks for the replies.

Yes. Don't Google. Fingers crossed all goes okay for you and you get some help soon.

Suzi888 · 17/01/2023 11:21

💐 Your in the right place - hope all is well.

bumder33 · 17/01/2023 11:24

Keeping everything crossed for you. I have similar unpleasant arse issues (hence my username).

I would say that something has maybe 'popped' due to you being constipated. Red blood is usually less concerning than dark or tar like blood. But you've absolutely done the right thing by getting checked out.

Surprised by how many people have skin tags in this area, thought I was the only one.

rainbowstardrops · 17/01/2023 11:26

Hope you don't have to wait too long!

The bowel cancer test done at home tests tests for blood which can not be seen by the naked eye

“The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is a lab test used to check stool samples for hidden (occult) blood.

Occult blood in the stool may indicate colon cancer or polyps in the colon or rectum — though not all cancers or polyps bleed.

Typically, occult blood is passed in such small amounts that it can be detected only through the chemicals used in a fecal occult blood test.”

op already knows that she is bleeding from her back passage, the test will not give any further clinical info. I am aware that Op is now in the emergency department but I wanted to still add it to the thread on the off chance it helps someone else.

Squamata · 17/01/2023 11:33

Hope it goes well OP, doctors will not be bothered by hairy legs in the slightest!

I was going to say this, as it’s pretty much what I was told at a hospital appointment.

Best of luck OP 💐

Hope you get answers

One thing I would suggest is to look up the poo description and photo chart that is used in hospitals and care homes for patients and residents

Can't remember the name of the chart ATM but it will help when describing to medical staff what your poo is like

I think they are graded by numbers iyswim

bloodywhitecat · 17/01/2023 11:52

Bristol Stool chart?
