Im so scared. I've had a raft of symptoms, pain under right right, Gas, wind.

I've just had an abnormal FIT test of 10, they said it's borderline but with the symptoms it's very worrying.

Im completely freaking out, I have 2 small kids

Hello, sorry to hear you are finding yourself in this situation. Is it blood in faeces that the test is showing? Friend's dad had that, with all the classic worrying symptoms, but only polyps were found which were removed during colonoscopy. Hope your results will be reassuring too.
Good you will be seen quickly, I have symptoms too but have been waiting 8 month, but finally colonoscopy and endoscopy is scheduled in a few days.
Anxiety is so hard, does anyone around you know what you are going through?

ilkleymoorbartat · 12/01/2023 04:51

Thank you and sorry to hear you are in the same situation.
My husband and parents know, but they can't control my anxiety which is through the roof. I know I have to just deal with it, but I'm so scared.

Really hope you get to be seen quickly. Have your symptoms started long ago?

ilkleymoorbartat · 12/01/2023 05:02

I've been having symptoms on and off for 18montjs.
They initially thought gallbladder but now this positive still test

Must be so frustrating, I was seriously considering going private in another country when finally my gastro consultation came through. It is horrible to be waiting. Was there anything that you feel triggered symptoms to start with? For me it seemed vaguely related to use of antibiotics and feel the GP was so fixated on that she dismissed the possibility of something more serious, although in fairness she did run a variety of tests.

elliesmummy19 · 12/01/2023 05:46

I’m currently going through this (I’m actually sat drinking Moviprep right now for my colonoscopy later this morning). I suspect I have Crohns. Saw my GP about ongoing IBD type symptoms. Calprotectin was raised, inflammatory markers raised etc. Did a FIT test recently and my GP called my the day before Christmas Eve to say that it had come back positive (I think mine was 50) so referred me for an urgent colonoscopy which I have an appointment for today.

I did panic and have been extremely worried about today but feel like (at least in my case) that it’s much more likely to be something else that can be managed than something sinister.

I hope you get an appointment as quickly as I have and get an answer!

ilkleymoorbartat · 12/01/2023 08:48

Hope today goes ok @elliesmummy19
I'm finding it really hard to stay calm tbh. I've convinced myself it's bowel cancer.

@elliesmummy19 Good luck withthe procedure today! Can I ask how the preparation was for you? I have to start taking Dose1 at 6pm tomorrow and will be alone with the kids at home so wondering how I will manage bedtime with them if I need to run to the loo regularly.
Then will need to take Dose2 at 6am and appointment is at 9:30. I wonder for how long after Dose2 I will be stuck to the toilet as I was planning to take the bus to the hospital but it will be an hour. Maybe I should wear a nappy!

elliesmummy19 · 12/01/2023 12:00

It was absolutely fine! I was expecting it to be like when you have a stomach bug/food poisoning. TMI but it was mainly just like I was peeing out of my bum. I only had a bit of cramping (but minor) before I went to bed last night. Slept all night. Felt a bit sick this morning but think that was more hunger than anything.

I started taking the Moviprep at 5 yesterday, drank the litre in a hour. I started going to the toilet about a hour and a half later. Was in bed and asleep by 10 then slept right through till I had to get up at 5 to start again. The toilet trips started quicker this morning but really was just like I was peeing out of my bum- no pain really just the feeling that there was something there.

Good luck!

Coldaroo · 12/01/2023 12:44

Thank you for letting me know. How was the procedure itself? Did you feel much pain? I have both colonoscopy and endoscopy on Saturday, don't know which one to fear most, probably both!
Hope you can rest for the rest of the day and will get ressuring results. Do they tell you anything afterwards or is it a separate follow-up appointment?

elliesmummy19 · 12/01/2023 12:49

It was fine. Way better than I was expecting! The hardest part was getting a cannula in to sedate me. I had fentanyl and midazolam which made me feel like I’d been drinking but I remember it all. I would have been perfectly fine getting it done without any meds at all though. There was only one slight bit at the end that was uncomfortable but not terrible at all and I really didn’t need sedation for it.

They told me what they were seeing as they were doing it and a nurse came to speak to me afterwards. They told me I have ulcerative colitis (not anything more sinister than god! I’d been worrying about cancer). They took lots of biopsies and I’ll get the results back in about a month or so. My GP with refer me on to a gastroenterologist so I’m not sure what happens next but at least I know what they saw.

Coldaroo · 12/01/2023 13:03

That is reassuring news and hopefully you can go on a treatment pathway to help with the condition. Fingers crossed for all clear biopsies. Thank you for the info, hope both OP and I will have asimilarly comfortable expereince with the procedure.

Sorry, can I just ask a super silly question: are you completely naked in the gown during the procedure,e.g. bra and socks off as well? Are your legs covered with a sheet during the process or is your lower half fully exposed? Thank you!

elliesmummy19 · 12/01/2023 13:05

You get a pair of disposable “modesty shorts”- they’re a bit like those old fashioned baby grows with the flap on the bum (does that make sense?) with Velcro on so your bits are all covered but they have easy access 😂 I also got a gown and was allowed to keep my socks, bra and t-shirt on. They wheeled me in on the trolley so no risk of me accidentally flashing my bum to anyone 😂

Coldaroo · 12/01/2023 13:07

Haha, modesty short, brilliant! :)

Hope today goes ok @elliesmummy19

@ilkleymoorbartat It is hard not to get carried away with worrying thoughts. Hopefully your appointment comes through soon. I have been really scared of the possible diagnosis but trying to tell myself that knowing will hopefully offer some treatment options and I will at least know what I am dealing with. Sending you best wishes!

ilkleymoorbartat · 12/01/2023 19:30

Thank you @Coldaroo
Can I ask what your symptoms are?

OP posts:
elliesmummy19 · 12/01/2023 19:34

I didn’t see this comment. How old are you? I only ask because it seems like bowel cancer in younger people isn’t that common (I googled a lot too because that’s what I was worried about). I can’t remember exactly what my GP said but I think 10 on the FIT is quite low. I think he said he’s had patients who’s FIT has come back in the hundreds and they haven’t had cancer.

It really is worrying though! When did you get referred? My GP called me the day before Christmas Eve then I got a call the day after Boxing Day with an appointment for a colonoscopy. Hopefully you’ll get an appointment just as quickly and will have some answers soon.

ilkleymoorbartat · 12/01/2023 20:03

Thanks @elliesmummy19 I hope you're feeling ok.

Im not that young, 45.
The cut of for normal fit test is 10 but the said because its 10 I've been referred immediately
On cancer pathway. It's the fact that I'm having so many abdo symptoms with it I feel it'll be impossible for it for to be cancer.

I also don't understand how blood level in fit test correlates to cancer diagnosis.

OP posts:
Coldaroo · 13/01/2023 07:46

Hi @ilkleymoorbartat , for me the main symptom is loose yellow-coloured stool, regardless of what I eat. I also get some abdomina pain and cramping sometimes, but not constantly. Lately nausea as well, mainly in the evening. My FIT has been negative though and I have not lost weight (although i actually need to), hence my case not treated as urgent. At some point my calprotectin was very high, but that seems to have normalised. Liver and pancreatic blood tests have come back normal. I'm 42.
Colonoscopy and endoscopy are tomorrow, which is not the most convenient as we also have 2 small children, so my partner needs to stay at home with them, but this was the earliest available appointment so I just accepted it.

JustDanceAddict · 13/01/2023 11:38

@Coldaroo - good luck. I had high calprotectin - >2000 which normalised in two months to 7!! All scopes and bloods were normal too (as was Fit test).
this was all post-covid so they’re putting it down to that.

Things aren’t 100% back to normal, but a lot better

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/01/2023 17:05

Feeling very scared right now. Hiding from my family whilst I sob upstairs. Realise this isn't the right way off dealing with things but I'm totally convinced I have cancer.

OP posts:
frostygarden · 14/01/2023 17:15

Hi Op...so sorry you're struggling at the moment. Why don't you tell someone how you're feeling, have a good cry and try and get some relief from the anxiety?

One of my family members was fast tracked because of blood in poo and other abdo symptoms. The night before his colonoscopy it was really bad and I had this awful anxious feeling. Guess what? Totally clear and the biopsies came back fine. They never did get to the bottom (pun intended!) of what it was and he's fine now.

There are SO many things it could be and even if it's something not very nice, there are so many things/treatments available. I know when you get stuck in an anxiety loop it's really hard to get out but can you share with someone and get some reassurance? You'll hopefully have answers very soon. ❤️

elliesmummy19 · 14/01/2023 17:32

OP, I’m so sorry you’re so worried. I felt exactly as you felt, was sure it was going to be cancer so I won’t say not to worry because I know that’s not easy.

Do your family know how worried you are? Could you talk to them? As frostygarden said, would a good cry and talking about it may help.

ilkleymoorbartat · 14/01/2023 18:32

I know I should talk but it's really hard with my young kids about. Also everyone has just told me not to worry but my abdomen has shooting pains all over it so it's hard not to think the worse. I am crying on my own though so maybe I'll get it out that way.

I hope your colonoscopy went well @elliesmummy19 x
