UTI that won't go away....

My 19yo DD started with a UTI in the first week of December when she was at Uni and managed to see her GP whilst there and was given a 3 day course of Macrobid (no urine sample taken). She then came home as she was still ill, was refused to be seen by our GP and told to go to the walk in centre, which she did and got a further 3 day course of Macrobid. They did a urine test and she was told that they couldn't find any resistance to antibiotics but she had ketones and protein in her urine. She then came home for Christmas, was a bit better, but on the 4th January we had a 111 call and they prescribed Trimethroprin for 5 days. We tried to take her back to Uni at the weekend, but she was still symptomatic and ended up bringing her home as she still felt unwell. I managed to get hold of our GP this morning and lo and behold they've managed to get her on a temporary registration. She saw a Dr's assistant this afternoon who have asked her to do a urine sample to send away to the lab and the results should be in by Friday. I'm not sure what the next step is - more antibiotics, tests etc., I feel really sorry for her as she's in the middle of second year exam revision and clearly this isn't helping with her stress. Any words of advice?

Only to drink plenty of water to flush everything out and also to say that many pharmacists can prescribe for UTI’s now which would save waiting for an appointment with a Dr.

Does she wear thongs? That can increase the risk of UTI’s for some people. Cotton underwear, wipe front to back, drink plenty, sit fully on the toilet rather than hover to fully empty the bladder and urinate frequently. Shower rather than bath & shower after sex. Sounds miserable for her, I hope it’s resolved soon.

Yes she does wear thongs so will pass that bit of info onto her! She saw a physician’s assistant today who can refer to the GP if needed. Will see what the urine sample throws up

I can sympathise. Currently have a UTI. Dr said he couldn't see anything on dip test. 12 hours later I've got blood in my urine, a constant urge to go & pain when I go. Just been prescribed macrobid and hoping they will help. I often wonder where these infections come from/how they come about. Hugs to your DD, hope she is better soon

Thank you. She’s done a sample and hope to have the results by Friday.

I take d-mannose everyday to prevent reoccurring UTI's. I think you can but on Amazon or Holland and Barrett. Since taking I have not had one uti in a year.

Drink cranberry juice with water in - I drank lots of this and it really helped to get infection under control

Wibbly1008 · 10/01/2023 17:57

Oh and sorry - big knickers , no thongs

Bluestripeddress · 10/01/2023 18:20

Cranberry juice really does nothing I’m afraid.

hay5689 · 10/01/2023 18:28

Another vote for d-mannose. I get mine from Holland & Barrett and take them religiously every day and haven't had a uti since I started a few months ago 🤞

Eloisedublin123 · 10/01/2023 18:41

a tablespoon of bread soda in water helps I think

WetBandits · 11/01/2023 22:48

Has she had an STI test?

Anoushka1986 · 11/01/2023 22:50

Another vote for D-Mannose. Also, high strength vitamin c. I've also heard that urva ursi is effective too.

kitcat15 · 11/01/2023 22:53

I always get a 7 day course of antibiotics ….3 days just doesn’t do it for me….my infections are always E. coli

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 15/01/2023 20:08

Thanks all. Her urine sample came back ok but they advised her to make another Drs appointment once she gets back to Uni and get a STI test too. I’ve got her D-mannose too 👍

Has she had a recent STI test?

encoreunfoisnumber2 · 15/01/2023 23:37

Out of interest, which STIs can make you pee like a UTI ?

Rebel2023 · 15/01/2023 23:45

I've had a similar issue and it flares every so often. What helps

No blackcurrant drinks
I took this Bio-Kult Pro-Cyan Advanced... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009T71JXW?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare
Washing after the toilet (E. coli) so I used a bidet bottle and plain soap (back only!!)
No scented stuff in the bath or shower

There's a bit about the washing here, yes it's a bit of a pain but I noticed it really helped
