Hair loss on legs and pubic hair loss

This isn't a major health crisis for me. About 7 years ago I noticed hair loss in my pubic hair. There is a hug bald patch there. Probably the size of a lemon size of bald patch. I don't like it. I also have bald patches on my legs. At the time I waited 6 months to see if it would regrow but nothing ever happened.

I went to my GP and she took bloods and thyroid. The only thing that came back was low iron. Nothing else found.

I must admit I was an awful person for being consistent with taking iron. I changed so much in the years since then. I cleaned up my diet big time. I focus a lot of my diet on eggs and vegetables and other nutrition. I limit processed foods. I am eager to explore anti inflammatory food stuffs and I include them most of the time. I hardly eat processed foods. I never eat fast food. Recently gave up red meat too. I also take vitamins every day like vitamin c, iron, magnesium. These are my every day supplements. From time to time I add others like collagen and vitamin e sometimes.

I never got a diagnosis. These bald patches still exist to this day and I hate it. Especially on the pubic hair. At the time 7 years ago I was worried that maybe it would spread to my scalp but thank goodness that never happened. My hair did thin somewhat since my youth however. I am 40 now and I do think I am peri menopause at this stage. I doubt the baldness would be a peri symptom and that would be too young for peri. I would have been 33 at the time.

Has anyone here experienced bald patches on the body? Can it be reversed?

I lost pubic hair in peri.

My pubes are somewhat
sparse since peri, I’ve also got a bald patch over my section scar.

It’s very common as we get older. I’m an ex-nurse and have seen countless vulvas. I’d say it was the norm rather than the exception to have sparser pubic hair in the later years.

I developed two bald patches on my calves that stayed for several years. My head hair also thinned and became brittle in 2021.

My hair is thick again, and the leg hair came back last year when I focussed on building up my ferritin and B12. I did this with supplements and eating more meat, especially liver.

Maybe cutting out red meat wasn’t the best move for you? I reduced my meat intake, thinking it was better for me, but actually I think I need it. I still eat mostly vegetables, and only whole grains, no UPFs etc, but I don’t know if cutting out meat is necessarily good for everyone. I’m quite muscular and I think I need the protein. Since I’ve increased it, I feel better and my hair has returned.

Sorry, duplicate posting due to the site glitch! I think I’ve reported the duplicates.

It isn’t always because of ageing. My pubic and arm hair began getting sparser when I was in my 20s - it’s often a sign of low thyroid function (via high antibody counts) or other automimmune problems. Did the GP test thyroid antibodies or did they just donthe standard tests?

TheLeadbetterLife · 10/01/2023 10:53

Yes, the bald patches on my calves appeared in my early 30s, I'm 41 now and it's been about a year since the hair returned.

I wouldn't worry about it, look on it as less shaving or waxing. If you don't do either maybe trim the pubic area to give it a more even look.

Get your iron tested again though, because as you say you don't want it to start happening on your scalp.

Thank you for the replies.

I got my thyroid checked as well at the time and that came back good. No issues emerged from the thyroid. The only thing that came back at the time was low iron. At the time I never took the iron issue seriously and I was never consistent with taking iron. I am consistent now with taking iron every morning with my vitamin c. I don't know what the iron level is. It definitely came up but it is still on the lower side.

I am taking iron tablets because the tablets are more confident for me. They fit better into my life instead of liquid iron. I wonder if I should be going down the route of liquid iron instead of the tablets.

God, I hope it wasn't peri starting in my early 30s.
