Chronic daily heartburn recommendations

Hi, I have been suffering with horrendous heartburn several times a day for a while now. Will be booking GP appointment Monday.
Every time I eat I get the worst burning in my chest and throat
can taste acid
belching
slight tummy pain
feeling sick
Have tried taking Rennies & Gaviscon to little effect.
I am thinking it could be GERD. Has anyone else experienced similar and what has helped you please. I’m in agony and literally can’t eat anything without it causing me these symptoms.

I had this and the only thing that stopped it was Omeprazole from the GP.

You can buy omeprazole now over the counter Nexium or boots do their own brand

Definitely recommend Omeprazole.

I second what Ravageur said. If you get the OTC version for now it definitely does help - I used it a few times. Obviously you need to "see" the GP but you don't have to suffer all weekend - I would get to the chemist ASAP!

I'm sorry you are suffering, I just wanted to make the comment that you need to be off of ppi medication (ie acid suppressing drugs such as omeprazole) for 2 weeks before a test for h pylori can be done. Your Dr may want to do this test so it might be best not to start a ppi before seeing the Dr, of course it is up to you. Maybe try Gaviscon Advance liquid after every meal and before bed in the meantime.

Famotidine has helped me a lot, OP. I can't take PPIs like omeprazole, lansoprazole, etc, and have found Famotidine relatively gentle and very effective. GP prescribed mine but you may be able to get it OTC (think it may previously have been marketed as Pepcid, but could be wrong about that).

Rather than spending £££ on Gaviscon Advance I buy Peptac liquid from a pharmacy - you have to ask the pharmacist for it as they'd prefer you to buy the Gaviscon for a tenner rather than Peptac for £3.50 for the same size bottle. It's the same ingredients
