Sinus infection - need help!

I am feeling v sorry for myself. I feel like I’ve been ill of one kind of another for weeks. Most recently I had a cold which was fairly manageable until fever hit, and then full on sinusitis. I have barely been able to sleep in a week, I feel like I’ve been punched repeatedly in the face, and just have continuous gunk coming out of my nose. I’m taking ibuprofen, tried nose sprays, sinus rinse, steaming and absolutely nothing is making a difference. Is there anything else I can try? I’m feeling so rubbish, have a 2 year who I feel terrible for not giving my time (he’s fine with dad but I still feel guilty) and have had to take time off work.

Is there anything else I can try? Any miracle cures out there?

Is the mucus clear or green / yellow?

Sickofsinuses · 04/01/2023 13:27

Green/yellow but mainly yellow.

You may need antibiotics, it was the only thing that worked for me.

DH has this recently, awful sinus infection for more than a week, and got prescribed antibiotics and a steroid spray from GP. That finally cleared it up. I would get a GP appointment if you can, his was just over the phone

Only thing working for me is salt water in a bowl and snorting it up to wash the snot out, three times a day,has really helped.

Antihistamine and sinus massage may help to relieve the pressure

See your GP

I suffer with bad rhinitis and I find the above helpful as well as: sinus rinse twice daily and steroid nasal spray. You may also need a course of antibiotics if it’s hanging around for a long time. It sounds like a GP consult would be a good call. Take care, sinus issues are terrible x

Infrared lamps help dry out the sinuses. But if it's been longer than a week and not improving i would also look at getting antibiotics. Especially given your description- if you had a cold first and the sinuses got hit later on most likely it's a secondary bacterial infection.

You may need antibiotics. Thick green mucus can be a sign of infection.
Re the steam inhalations, they will help, but you need to be doing them at least 6 x a day. I found the steam cups useless and went back to a bowl and tea towel over my head (just be careful not to burn your nasal passage on the steam).
You have my full sympathy sinusitis hurts like hell and is utterly miserable Flowers

Thanks everyone, I'll work my way through tips. I saw my GP yesterday but he wouldn't give antibiotics - said there were no signs of it being bacterial, so probably viral. He did give me a steroid nasal spray so using that but last night was worse than ever so hope something starts working soon. Would have quite happily let someone drill a hole in my head to relieve the pressure if they'd offered last night! Worst part is I'm due to go on a long planned holiday for my birthday on Sat and looking like I'll have to cancel now.

Google spirulina (powder or tablets) works great for me!

I was having recurrent sinus infections and after a while it seemed that nothing would shift them. Eventually I got a 'neti pot' and I could get rid of them. After a few more infections I stopped getting them almost entirely. I get maybe 1 every year or 2. The neti pot can also be used as a preventative. Absolute godsend.
