Am I thinking too much into this?

I had a routine opticians appointment today. The optician was a trainee. Whilst shining the light in my eyes asking me to look in different directions he pulled away and looked at me very puzzled. He explained that my eyes drift.. I knew I had lazy eyes anyway. He said the muscles are weak and one eye stays in the middle and the other drifts outwards. Both eyes do this.

He said he wanted to get a second opinion from a senior as he felt I may need a referral to the eye hospital. I asked him what it is he thinks I have. He said he “didn’t want to tell me until he got a second opinion”

She did the same tests as above and said what the trainee optician said about my eyes drifting outwards. She said I would benefit from a routine eye hospital referral where I would get an appointment in a couple of months.

I am now worrying about what the trainee said! It sounded like he didn’t want to tell me because it was bad news..

Am I thinking too much into this?

If it was urgent you would get a much quicker appointment.

If it was anything serious it wouldn’t just be a ‘routine in a couple of months’ appointment. Honestly, I’ve known someone go for a sight test, the optician get straight on the phone and the patient be urgently seen in the eye clinic that day because the optician could see there was a tumour.

They should have explained further though. You could give them a ring and say you’d like them to explain what the issue is and why you are referred. The trainee is just not as experienced in talking things through with patients.

Oh yeah, I totally get that if it was serious it wouldn’t be a routine referral. I was just concerned about what the trainee thought I had. I should have asked but I was in a rush to feed my baby!
