How long are people having this flu virus for?

Hi, I've had that flu virus thats going around for two weeks. It went away for Christmas Eve and Day and then came back. Feel really rough, no energy, temperature every night, coughing like a donkey, just feel like Ive been steamrolled. I'm a single mum and am struggling a bit now. Just looking for some hope really. How long are people generally having it for? I am doing all the right things, drinking water, resting, sleeping, I havent had kids for 4 days so I haven't had stress either but STILL feel like sh*te. They're back tomorrow so I'm worrying a bit how I'm going to cope. Looking for a bit of hope? Could I be on the home run now? Doesn't feel like it. Went to see GP before Christmas as chest was rattling but she said it was a virus and nothing to be done. The rattle has subsided a bit but am still hacking. Not covid, and have had flu jab.

Any ideas on the timeline? Thanks a lot. x

I had it for about 2 weeks. I did start feeling better after a week but then like you started feeling really ill again, like in my ears/glands etc.

Hope you feel better soon

Beansontoast45 · 28/12/2022 14:18

I’ve had it around a week and it’s still waking me at night. I’m not really ill with it but my throat is sure and the dry cough is horrible. Hope you feel better soon.

ohidoliketobe · 28/12/2022 14:19

3 weeks tomorrow since I first started to feel ropey, and I've still got a cough, laryngitis and feeling exhausted

grievinggirlneedsadvice · 28/12/2022 14:35

5 weeks in and yesterday the first time my throat and cough ok to read DDS bedtime story without pain last night. Relief!

ohsotired2022 · 28/12/2022 14:51

This is week 4 and yesterday for the 1st time felt almost back to normal.
Been to the GP twice and got antibiotics the 2nd time.
Still got a slight cough in the morning but boring like it was.
Hope you feel better soon.

Mine was 4 weeks on Christmas Day. Turned into a sinus infection last week, managed to get anti biotics on the 23rd and feel much better now.

Lakeviewhouse · 28/12/2022 18:27

Have it 1 week now and today is the 1st day I feel human. Still so sense of smoll and sinus very congested. Back to work tomorrow.

Vallmo47 · 28/12/2022 18:34

6 weeks for me and going on 9 for my daughter, she did follow up with covid though so hers might be that. It feels never ending. Sorry Op.

Newuser82 · 28/12/2022 18:38

Three weeks tomorrow for me . Feel very lethargic and still got a rotten cough but I don't feel as breathless today so am hoping to be better again tomorrow. Been awful!

cloverleafy · 28/12/2022 18:50

Almost 4 weeks here. Still coughing, tired and intermittent sore throat. Doing much better than I was a fortnight ago though.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 28/12/2022 18:56

3 and a half weeks here and still feeling rough as is husband. Still coughing, still got no energy, still full of cold.

Twizbe · 28/12/2022 18:57

3 weeks then I developed an abscess on my back. Needed antibiotics for that and they cleared the last of any infection. I'm guessing they were able to fight the bacteria giving my immune system capacity to finish off the virus.

It was horrible though.

NameChangedAMillionTimes · 28/12/2022 22:32

Thanks everyone, temperature up again tonight and feeling rubbish. Guess it could be a week or so more of it. Not sure what to do to get better quicker. Someone was talking about vitamin injections, is that a thing? Do they work?

I've had it for about two weeks. First visit to GP they said viral. Second they gave me antibiotics and then steroids. All have been taken and I'm still not 100%. Get to the doctors incase you need antibiotics. And hope you feel well soon. Such a struggle on your own.

Heronatemygoldfish · 28/12/2022 23:25

4 weeks today and still have vaguely sore throat and occasional cough. Horrible virus, whatever it was. Not had one for years that has put me in bed for best part of a week followed by a cough that keeps me and everyone else awake. And I was flujabbed... just hope it goes soon!

70sShmeventies · 29/12/2022 15:30

Oh god, sounds like I’m in for the long haul.

I felt like I had a cold last Thursday and then was shivering and feverish all night, had the worst headache Friday and couldn’t move for the aches. Managed to drag myself through Christmas Eve and Day, and have felt god awful everyday since. No energy, headache, cough, muscle weakness, sore throat and now pretty sure it’s go into my sinuses as my face and teeth are agony. Also had a dodger tummy in the run up.

I hope you all feel better soon, it’s the pits,

Lilfirth · 29/12/2022 15:49

It’s day 17 here for me, but although I still have cough, runny nose, tiredness, I am much better in myself - ie not feeling utterly miserable - since about day 15.

Babymamma192 · 29/12/2022 15:59

I've had it for a week, it's the worst! It has knocked me for 6!

Anyone else been throwing up with it?

Can't face food and then if I do manage to eat I can't keep it down.

hiredandsqueak · 29/12/2022 16:25

I had it for a week, it went for three days, came back worse for a fortnight, a weeks recovering and now the sore throat and cough is back again. I have never been unwell for so long before.

CreatingHavoc · 29/12/2022 17:32

I keep thinking I'm getting better. It's been two weeks now since I first felt off and one week of properly feeling awful with high temps, sinuses, nausea, diarrhoea and a tickly cough. I still have a low grade fever, even though most of my symptoms are much less. I'm not sure what's going on.

NameChangedAMillionTimes · 29/12/2022 22:10

Thanks for all the replies. Hope we all get better soon. If anyone discovers any get well quick solutions let me know. Nothing seems to be helping here!

I started a week before Xmas, spent 4 days in bed, felt better Xmas Eve and Xmas day, back to being in bed on Boxing Day and still in bed. Feel awful. Negative for covid. Have never felt so sick in my life. Terrible sore throat, hot, dizzy, upset stomach, was vomiting yesterday

Jeelypieces20storeys · 29/12/2022 22:15

Day 10 here and I'm coughing till I puke and peeing myself constantly. Also single mum & son is autistic and screeching every time I cough. It's not fun!

Willygogs · 29/12/2022 22:17

I’ve had it since October. Still got the cough, and feeling completely washed out. Slept for most of the day yesterday

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/12/2022 22:20

I'm glad (not in a mean way) it's not just me, I just can't seem to shake this blimmin thing off!

Had a brief respite over Christmas Day/Boxing Day but then when downhill again with a really sore throat and feeling like I'd been run over.

Have debated calling the GP but it's such an ordeal I don't think I can face it. Fingers crossed everyone is on the mend by the New Year!
