Fell spectacularly 2 weeks ago and knee still bothering me

So a few weeks ago in my rush to catch a train due to the strikes I spectacularly fell on the platform and hurt my knee. I was helped up by 2 lovely men and put on the train. By the time I got to my work it was 2 hours later and I cleaned up my knee under my jeans with some anti-septic and put a plaster where I had grazed.

I thought it was just a bruise but its been 2 weeks and my knee is still sore. I find that it's clicking a lot, still swollen (the graze has healed), the area is warm to touch (warmer than my other knee, and i find that if i'm walking or standing while I can it hurts and even when resting and icing it I am feeling a pain with it.

I recently moved and haven't had time to sort out a doctor, is it worth popping along to a walk-in clinic or calling 111 for advice? Don't want to waste anyone's time but worrying a bit since its been 2 weeks and not getting any better. I haven't gone before now due to strikes/christmas and thinking it was just bruised (which i understand could still be!).

Any advice appreicated! I know that Mumsnet is not the place for medical advice but I'm awake thinking about it and just wondered if anyone else had had anything similar and what it ended up being?

Thanks!

Yes have a Google and see where your local minor injuries is. Ours has an X-ray department - might be worth seeing if you can find one that does in case you need an X-ray.

Sound v painful btw and I hope it gets better soon!

An X-ray and maybe an MRI? I fell and smacked my knee hard into the ground- turned out to be a chip off the patella and some soft tissue damage- the bruising was spectacular and the swelling was quite wicked too. It took a good 3months before I was back to normal and more like 6 before I was back running comfortably again.
Definitely get it checked, even if it's just so you know how to manage it and what to expect in terms of healing.

I had a spectacular fall back in March - both knees. I didnt go the GP or anyone else, as the NHS website didn't advise it. Eventually, after about 5 months and it still being very swollen and my ankles had swollen up as well, I visited the GP. They recommended Ibuprofen and ice. I did see a physio who gave me exercises which I did religiously. They are now not painful, but one is still swollen and feels numb if I kneel on it. It can take a long time for them to get back to normal, though I'm not sure if one of them will ever go back to normal.

The GP didn't suggest going to X-ray etc. Maybe I have a rubbish GP? Hope this is helpful.

@Photogemic how have you got on? Have you been up walk-in clinic?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 28/12/2022 11:23

I slipped in the shower in March and smashed my knee really hard on the shower tray.
At the time, it hurt like hell but no swelling or bruising.
10 months later, I still can’t properly kneel on it without a strange, slightly sickening pain, and sometimes the pain also happens if I move my leg in a certain way.

3 or 4 months after it happened, I spoke to my GP surgery who sent me straight to physio. The physio gave me exercises to strengthen my quads and lengthen my hamstrings, which has helped, but I’m wondering if I’ve got a bit of chipped bone floating around which causes the sporadic pain.

@anx12345 I haven't been able to go today as had a bit of a 'mare as we needed to get a lock changed! As my mum says when it rains it pours.

@PaperBagsAreUselessInRain I've googled and know the nearest place (that isn't A&E or one located in A&E) so will give 111 a call tomorrow as hardly done anything today and it's really nagging me with this constant dull pain. Thanks the get well wishes :)

@Alsoplayspiccolo @BrandNewBicep Oh lord both of you these sound so painful! My mum would say it's a miracle that I have any knee's left! I was a very clumsy child always tripping over and now my husband thinks its a miracle if i stay upright!

@spottygymbag thanks I think you are right even if its just that they tell me its going to be x amount of weeks but you will feel better after this. Then I know what to expect. Glad to hear you are back running :)

Thanks all for your answers and wishes. Will update tomorrow once I've been to the clinic.

Good luck with it all. And follow all the advice on how long to rest. I'm currently laid up with a broken foot 🙄 and learnt my lesson about getting things checked from the knee incident. I thought I was being a bit melodramatic after tripping and rolling my foot in a pothole and would have struggled on with trying to run, daily school runs and commute. This would have buggered it completely. Instead I was straight up the rd to the GP for X-ray and ct scan which showed two broken bones and put in a boot for 6 weeks followed by very slow rehab for another 6!

Go and sort out a GP

XenoBitch · 29/12/2022 20:26

I fell on mine back in April. Full on weight on it. Had a nasty bruise and it it hurt for ages.
Now, I still have a weird numb spot on it, and I still can't kneel on it without a sharp pain.
I told my GP.. and he "helpfully" said to stop kneeling on it.
