Temperature dropping below 34c

EllaView · 27/12/2022 20:01

I’ve been feeling under the weather for a few days. My temperature keeps dropping below 34c and seems to hover around 34.2c except after I’ve eaten. When I have a meal, my temperature returns to around 36c. What’s going on? How can I be ‘hypothermic’ and not feel cold? Any advice would be gratefully received!

When you say under the weather, what do you mean?
That's a very low temp and I'd be inclined to say if that's consistent then get checked! Any other symptoms?

EskSmith · 27/12/2022 23:19

That doesn't seem right, below 35 is seen as a medical emergency.

How are you testing? Can you test any others in your household and see what reading they get?

EskSmith · 27/12/2022 23:20

I'm thinking it may be possible that your device is significantly under reading and your 36 degree reading is actually a spike in temperature?

Augend23 · 27/12/2022 23:21

I'd calibrate your thermometer (using another person) and if it's pretty close to correct, then you need to treat it as you would hypothermia from any other cause - body temp that low means A and E ASAP I think.

Your thermometer is broken.

I have to take my temp on a mounted forehead thermometer every time I visit my dad in his nursing home. During the very cold weather it was regularly below 35 and once 32.4!

How are you OP?

Craver · 28/12/2022 10:03

Dodgy thermometer, 34 is not compatible with posting on mums net.

How are you OP?

I’m still much the same. If I don’t pick up tomorrow I’ll speak to my surgery. I just hate phoning them - I always worry about time wasting.

I’d try a different thermometer. And make sure you’re following instructions for getting g a good reading. Is it an in-ear one?

Braun is a good make.

Have you got anyone else with you, to take their temperature? To make sure the thermometer is actually OK?
Or a different thermometer?
If you're that cold you'd be getting some sort of other symptom.. what are your symptoms?

EllaView · 28/12/2022 17:42

I have tested it on my husband and (adult) daughter and they are both sitting at 36.5, perfectly normal. I am just tired and feeling out of sorts.

The only time I've had a low temperature is when I've had pneumonia that lead to sepsis.. if the thermometer is working correctly as you said you've tried on other adults, and you're still reading in the 34s.. you really need to seek medical attention straight away.

Agreed. Read the NHS website.

"It's a medical emergency and needs to be treated in hospital" "go to a and a or call 999"

It's not necessarily something terrible. For some reason when I'm ill I run a low temperature, not a high temperature. I'm normally at 36.2C and when I had Covid (+'ve test) my temperature went down to 34.8. I can't remember running a fever, I can still feel ill though. Maybe you're the same.

Little man had a temperature of 33.8 after his operation. It read 35 in the other ear.
