Had an appointment last week and am having a Hysteroscopy ? to remove a large polyp and a look in my womb in March (Im terrified)

As he was chatting, he asked "would you like a Mirena "?

He asked it out of the blue like he was asking if I would like a cup of tea lol

I think I ended up saying ok, but Im not sure now

I certainly dont need it for Contraception!!
my periods can be heavy at times

But hate anything been done down there (like most I suppose) and I know I have to go and have it removed and also have to check it is in place regulary

Not sure I really want one

can you tell me all there is to know please, good and bad1

Thanks

my clinic pushed it a lot - very inappropriately I thought. The nurse was trying to sell me the 'the progesterone stays in your uterus' but when I revealed I was still BF she changed her story. I demanded another discussion appt with a consultant. A lot of women seem to get hideous side-effects.

Well I love mine and am on my second as have had it for 6 years!

Don't know it's there and extra bonus = no periods = result.

It's the sort of thing that you either love or hate. Lots of previous threads where people like me think it's great then lots of other threads where people haven't got on with it at all.

thanks

Not sure what to do!

I had one fitted last August and straight away i got really bad acne . . which I had always auffered with but since having DS (now 3) had amanged to get it well under control (naturally) but also with laser surgery. So you can imagine how pissed off I was for it to come back with a vengence.

'Hormone' stays local to the area - my arse!!

Also, bled nearly every day (lightly) for first 3 months and have put on weight. Well, not put on weight, but my hips have widened a great deal - and I have never had any issue with weight, always stayed a constant weight.

The side effects are lessening now - I daren't have mine taken out in case it 'upsets's my balance again and my spots return. :-(

SaveFerris · 04/02/2008 14:27

Saying that, I have the lightest period ever - nearly non-existant.

So its not all bad :-)

CarGirl · 04/02/2008 14:30

I think you have to try it really to find out if it suits you. I'm not 100% happy with it because of all those hormones (although far less then the mini pill) however my periods were horrific, didn't dare go out of the house for 3 days and the bleeding lasted for at least a week. 2.5 years on I have very very light bleeding for about 5 days each month so I don't have to pay and take all the other drugs I was using before.

I had it in when dd4 was 4 weeks old so it is fine for bf mums btw. I don't think it is good for my depression but it's impossible to tell as I've been much better recently.

Def worth a try especially if you don't want anymore children

anniebear · 04/02/2008 19:10

Think Im getting put off lol

I didnt even want one, the consultant just mentioned it out of the blue lol

well def worth it if you have heavy periods, perhaps google to see if it may help reduce the chances of the polyps returning??? Ask him why he recommended it?

anniebear · 04/02/2008 19:28

he just asked "are your periods heavy"?

I said "erm, sometimes, but was putting that down to the polyp"

he said "would you like a mirena"?

I was like "Pardon?"!!!!!

There not heavy that I cant go out or they ruin my life

I have a mirena and have hadthe same procedure as you - I was out of hospital the same day and it really wasn't too bad.
The mirena has put my severe endemetreosis on hold -so i assume it will stop polys growing??,I'm much less tired, have more energy and no periods - bliss really. However, my friend who is allergic to quite a few things and reacted badly to the pill - hated it and got no benfit from it.

I have one and I love it!!

Only uncomfortable part was having it put in and didnt feel quite myself for 2-3days after. Other than that I have had nothing. I was quite suprised tbh as i have had bad reactions before from mini pill and once took emergancy contraception (which has the same hormone as the mirena)and that was awful! Can't feel it, dont know its there, havent bled since 4 weeks after it was put in and I am not preggers!

What more could a gal ask for? lol
