Virus going around

Anyone has this awful virus that's going around can you please tell me how long it lasts?

DH came home Wednesday and said he felt shocking, awful cough, banging head and body aches. I was hoping me and the dds 2 and 3 wouldn't get it.
I started coughing yesterday and felt a bit rough, dd age 2 started with a temp and cough yesterday as well.

Woke up this morning my head is bang and feel like I'm hungover but never touched a drop.

Really hoping this isn't going to ruin our Christmas!
It feels the exact same as when I had covid a few weeks ago

Some Not Covid actually is covid which tests positive only a few days along, or maybe only in some members of a household where actually everyone's got the same symptoms at the same time.

People I know who've had Not Covid have all said it's been a week or more of being really unwell (and most needed time off) and a good three weeks to feel actually better.

Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear.

KangarooKenny · 24/12/2022 07:25

Have you tested for covid ? I know 3 people with it right now.

dakel · 24/12/2022 07:27

Yes I've just done a test and it's negative.
When I had it last time I tested in day 2 of feeling rubbish and it came up straight away

We have had the same - me, kids etc. it's a nasty cough/cold and it lingers and floored me for a couple of days. It's not covid (had that a few weeks ago). Friends have also had this and it's a brutal cold/cough. Seems to be taking ages for us all to shake it off.

gogohmm · 24/12/2022 08:25

It's a cough/cold or potentially strep a, we are all down with strep a here

guessagain · 24/12/2022 08:36

I’m on day 5 of it & it’s not going anywhere 😞DD started feeling rubbish Sunday night, coughing, aches & pains, then me & DH started to feel rubbish on Tuesday, but I seem of of been hit the hardest. The cough is unreal, I wee myself when I cough it’s that bad, the migraines are like nothing I’ve experienced before my whole skeleton hurts, my skin hurts, my teeth, my throat, my stomach, no temp though. I feel like I’ve been put through a mangle. I was hoping I’d feel a bit better by now but I don’t. I can’t sleep. It’s shit, but it is what is is & I’ll just have to get on with it as it looks like I’m not going to feel any better tomorrow. Covid test negative. Even when I did have covid, it was never this bad!

No painkillers or cough medicine seems to work either. I’m tempted to try alcohol at last resort.

Jellyjam36 · 24/12/2022 08:36

Mine will be 4 weeks tomorrow, no idea if it has been 1 virus or many.
Started as mild cold, after 3 days got heavy. After 5 days felt like I was better.
Then wham, full blown cough until vomiting, head cold, fatigue, couldn't do anything.
Turned into chest infection after 2 weeks. Had antibiotics. Thought I was on the mend then coughed so much I fractured my rib. I'm 38 weeks pregnant and feel like I may have a mental breakdown from the pain.
I now have a very sore throat but I imagine I've caught a second bug at the hospital. Worst December ever and Christmas is cancelled for me.
It wasn't covid just so many bugs going around and my immune system is obviously really bad.

Icequeen01 · 24/12/2022 08:37

I'm still recovering from it. I started feeling really poorly nearly 2 weeks ago and as I had had someone in my car for around an hour who tested positive two days later I assumed it was Covid. I tested every day for a week but it was always negative.

Whatever it was/is completely floored me and I had to take the last week of term off. I thought I was getting over it, apart from the awful lingering cough, but now I've been up since 4am as I've got blood in my urine so obviously have a urine infection now so going to be racing to my nearest Boots to get some medication.

I hope you recover soon Op.

Icequeen01 · 24/12/2022 08:40

@guessagain I feel your pain about weeing yourself when you cough! I've had to ask my DM82 if I could have some of her Tena Ladies. I do wonder if all this weeing has somehow caused the urine infection I've now got.

guessagain · 24/12/2022 08:46

Icequeen01 - I’ve sent DH out for some tena lady! You know it’s weird but I do feel like I’ve had a touch of cystitis thrown in as well over that last few days, as if I wasn’t ill enough! Keep feeling like I wanted to go for a wee all the time but couldn’t pass any water.

Abraxan · 24/12/2022 08:50

Ours isn't covid. I am classed as vulnerable and get free tests, so have tested a few times now. All negative.

Dd had what seemed like flu a couple of weeks or so ago, whilst still at university. In bed for a few days, gradually improved. Still has a cough now, though much better.

I had a virus or cold about 4 weeks ago - heavy enough to have me laid up for a day. Seemed to improve then about a week and half or so ago something struck again - high temperature, cough, headache, aches and pains, fatigue, etc. Was sent home from work with it in the end. As my breathing was bad I went to the GP who diagnosed a chest infection. Spent 4 days laid up in bed feeling really rubbish - I rarely take to my bed but these last two viruses have been horrid.

It's now nearly 2 weeks in. I've finished one course of ABs but it hasn't cleared my chest so I'm now on a second, different course of ABs. I do feel better than I did and can get out and do stuff, but I'm having to take things much slower and get tired and out of breath very quickly. My cough is still waking me at night and it feels near constant during the day.

I'm fed up of it now.

Yeah i'm about 11 days in and still quite rough. Cough, bad chest, low energy, congestion.

It's interesting you and the pp mention the bladder issues. I've b]never had any issues at al before. Even when I had pneumonia years ago and was coughing it wasn't an issue. But this time the cough feels really harsh, quite violent bouts and yes, it's been testing my pelvic floor and it's not always holding up fully. I hate it and feel rubbish about it. I've taken to,wearing my period pants every day - just incase.

I hate feeling so rubbish for so long!

That's exactly the same as me. I've lost track of how many times I've been to the loo this morning only to do a dribble and then have that horrible burning sensation. It's rubbish it really is.

RoseAndRose · 24/12/2022 15:17

One of the types of long covid affects muscles - most commonly cardiac and skeletal, but smooth muscle can be affected too. ‘Covid bladder’ is a form of long covid - it may clear spontaneously over time (weeks/months) but if it doesn’t then it might be worth seeing your GP and perhaps seeking a urology appointment

self help: reduce caffeine, do pelvic floor exercises, don’t be overweight

Jady1407 · 22/04/2023 12:20

Sorry to jump on after a few months, I hope you are much better now? My daughter seems to have what you had. I'm desperately trying to find out what I can do to help her. Any tips please and how long were you bad for? Thanks

CorsicaDreaming · 23/04/2023 09:58

@Jady1407 - I think I've currently got this too. Very similar symptoms to those described by PP but testing negative for Covid. I've now (3 weeks in) had pneumonia and been on two different antibiotics and oral steroids. And I think my chest is clearing a bit but I still feel far from better.

I also had conjunctivitis and needed chloramphenicol ointment (from pharmacy) for that too. Does your daughter have that?

Worth her seeing gp to check not turned into a bacterial pneumonia (the virus weakens it, then the bacteria can get in as a kind of secondary thing) - but I have asthma, so am probably more susceptible to this.

In terms of helping her above that - I've just used all the normal things:

Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Lemsip Max Day and Night
(Not all at the same time!)

Inhaling steam with drop of Olbas oil
Sore throat spray
Buttercup Syrup
Lemsip Dry Cough (it caused both!)
Benylin chesty cough (not since diagnosed as pneumonia as you're meant to get it out)
Sambucol

And then live yogurt and lactobacillus capsules to try and put back good bacteria wiped out by the antibiotics
