UTI? So much pain and bleeding

scoopoftheday · 19/12/2022 03:54

I know everything seems worse in the middle of the night but I am in absolute agony.

I feel like I am going to wet myself then when I go to the toilet (about every 15 mins currently) there's hardly any wee, but immense pain.

I'm also bleeding when I wipe.

I am going to try my GP first thing in morning but right now am just trying to drink lots of water. Hopefully they'll give me antibiotics.

Poor dh has to be up early tomorrow but I am going between the bed and ensuite so I don't wake the kids using the main bathroom. I have work too but I am WFH so hopefully I'll get by.

(TMI, I keep thinking I need a poo, theres a lot of pressure, but nothing comes when I push)

I feel like crying.

Sounds like a kidney stone. If the pain increases or you start vomiting go to hospital. Hope you feel better soon.

scoopoftheday · 19/12/2022 04:09

I will, I hate causing a fuss. If I can stick it to 8.30 our GP surgery is usually very good, they'd let me see a nurse earlyish I think

Buy cystocalm and drink plenty of water. If it doesn't clear up soon seek medical advice.

Crinkletinkle · 19/12/2022 04:28

Classic kidney stone symptoms. If you are struggling to urinate I would go to hospital sooner rather than later - untreated kidney stones can be serious. Even if it seems to get better, you should go to the doctor. Unless it has actually passed out of your body it will come back at some point and you may need medication or surgery to remove it.

Tryfull · 19/12/2022 04:51

It could be a UTI rather than a kidney stone. I get the bearing down feeling with a UTI. While you wait you could try drinking a glass of water with a spoon of bicarb in it. It takes the acid pain away and is basically what is in those Cystitis remedies in Boots etc

scoopoftheday · 19/12/2022 05:19

Thank you.

I'm bleeding quite a bit, I've got little clots in it. Not my period as it's not due for another 10 days or so and definitely not period pain.

Even if I ring OOH, there's nowhere open for me to get a prescription filled. (I live rurally and no 24 hour places within about a 50 mine radius)

I get UTIs from time to time and always need antibiotics- I’ve never had any bleeding associated with that. I would call 111 if I were you.

NewbieSM · 19/12/2022 05:28

Some supermarkets sell ural can you get some cranberry juice? Keep drinking water as it's keeps you voiding so helps to flush the bacteria through. Definitely will need antibiotics so see your GP asap. Also a hot water bottle helps with the cramping feeling, hope it clears up soon!

Eloisedublin123 · 19/12/2022 08:01

How are you Op? Agree a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda helps UTIS till you get antibiotics x

haahbrownsandwich · 19/12/2022 08:03

Go to the surgery and do a urine sample. If there's blood in the urine they should send it for microscopy and hopefully give you abx while awaiting results, if there are other signs of a UTI.
It could be a kidney stone etc instead so best to get into the GP as soon as you can.

All of this.

I'm just back from Dr and they got a sample, it was all bloody. He's sending it off but in meantime has given me a course of antibiotics (nitrofurantoin??)

ßaid if pain persists to ring them incase it's a kidney stone.

That's reassuring @scoopoftheday hopefully the nitro will kick in soon, it's our 'best guess' abx in most cases.

Lots of clear, non fizzy fluids is the only other thing to self help.

Fingers crossed it clears up nicely. Sometimes it takes a further course of abx but hopefully it'll be just that and cleared up for Christmas.

Until you can get to the doctors, drink as much as you can, at least a glass every hour, add a teaspoon of bicarb if you can bear to drink it, take some pain relief & have a hot water bottle or heat pad over your bladder. I had a uti like yours, my urine looked like gravy with thousands of tiny blood clots in it but went back to normal within hours of starting antibiotics. Get some D-mannose you can order on Amazon & take it every day to prevent you getting another uti like this again, I take 3000mg a day, it coats the lining of your bladder to stop infections starting, if you feel an infection starting you can double this. You can also get Ozo bladder pain relief tablets they kill the pain but turn your urine bright orange so if you need to keep a sample for the doctor do it before you start. If you are like me & often get uti, get your own dipstick tests so you can test if you feel one brewing & get antibiotics sorted quicker, my GP now does a prescription without having to see me, I just ring & tell them my dipstick results & I get a prescription.

Nat6999 · 19/12/2022 11:54

When I get a uti my bladder refuses to keep any urine in it, it spasms & causes me to wet myself.

scoopoftheday · 19/12/2022 12:50

Thank you everyone, I am drinking water and cranberry juice, thanks for the avoiding caffiene tips, I am willing to do anything to stop this pain.
My doctor was lovely which helps.

Hi @scoopoftheday I'm just getting over a UTI which caused blood on wiping, then more blood in the urine. I was prescribed nitrofurantoin, but the lab found an e-coli bacteria which is resistant to nitro, so I'm currently taking another antibiotic called ciprofloxacin. Nitro is the first line treatment usually, and the treatment may change depending on what the lab culture grows.

scoopoftheday · 19/12/2022 20:59

Thanks @Covidwoes

I hope if I need other antibiotics they'll let me know before they close for Christmas break.

Did your surgery phone you with the results? I can't even remember what mine said this morning!

Covidwoes · 19/12/2022 21:04

@scoopoftheday They sent me a text, along with details of the prescription. The lab culture took six days to come back though! Hopefully yours will be quicker. How are you feeling now?

RitaSueandBobtwo · 19/12/2022 21:16

Whenever I have had bleeding I have needed two lots of antibiotics and I felt quite rough for a couple of weeks afterwards.

Take care

billycorn · 19/12/2022 21:31

I feel your pain op. I’ve just had a UTI (my first), the pain was dreadful and I was passing a lot of blood. I found things improved quickly on antibiotics.

hashbrownsandwich · 19/12/2022 21:35

Lab results are usually 5 working days.

WavingCatpaw · 19/12/2022 23:29

I’ve had results much faster than than that before, within 48 hours and then the antibiotic changed accordingly.

Nat6999 · 19/12/2022 23:47

I got my results the day after.

scoopoftheday · 20/12/2022 08:44

I was only up twice last night and the pain is subsiding thankfully.

Who'd have thought this could bring you to your knees?

I have drank lots of water and not even one coffee tea or diet coke, I will do whatever it takes... (I usually drink at least 4 coffees and about 2 teas throughout the day)

scoopoftheday · 20/12/2022 08:44

And thank you all so much for all the advice and asking after me.
