Desogestrel - won't stop bleeding

Hi,

I've been on desogestrel for about 4 months. It's been ok mostly for side effects although I've put on a little weight.

I was put on it for suspected endometriosis and very heavy, painful periods. However, since going on it, my periods have been lighter but last about 3 weeks. And I'm not talking spotting, full on bleeding like you need sanitary protection.

Since seeing my gynae 6 weeks ago she recommended doubling the dose to stop my periods, this worked for about 5 weeks and now I'm 3.5 weeks into another bleed.

Wondering about people's experiences - will this bleeding ever settle down? I can't take the combined pill or the injection for medical reasons, and other hormonal things have had terrible effects on my MH in the past, so worried about trying anything else right now. Found the implant shit as well, bled for an entire year and had it out.

Sorry realised my maths up there made no sense, I clearly saw the gynae more than 6 weeks ago but anyway!

You could try an older style mini pill with 3 hour window. Think there are 2 of them that aren't desogestrel based

I bleed pretty much constantly on it but it’s light enough to just need a pad, whereas I couldn’t leave the house due to the flooding I had from fibroids previously. I’m sticking with it till I can have a hysterectomy.

I'll consider it, thanks. The gynae suggested having a Mirena put in when she does my laparoscopy which is another option.

Yeah it has made them a lot lighter so I guess I can't complain about that! They're a lot more painful for the first few days though - more painful than even my normal periods were, which is weird.

I would love to be one of those people who rarely gets bleeding on it.

I started this pill 3 weeks ago I have been constantly bleeding for 2 weeks so far? It’s light enough to just need a pad but it’s more when I go to the toilet more comes out or when I stand up ? Has anyone else had this?
When does it stop??

cptartapp · 07/03/2023 18:26

Can last up to six months. In some, it never settles.

pringlesinacan · 07/03/2023 18:27

I kept bleeding ending up anaemic so came off it for my own sanity

Ukmum25 · 07/03/2023 18:34

Did any of yous feel as though you bled more when standing up or going to the toilet? Also when you came off ur how long did it take for your bleeding to stop
thanks

pringlesinacan · 07/03/2023 19:11

@Ukmum25

Mine stopped within 3 days of stopping. I didn't bleed more on standing but I did when going to the toilet. In day to day life it was a light bleed which would increase over night, used to take pill 8pm. It would come out quite heavy through the night. It would even stop for the whole morning, then I'd start getting very bad cramping and would start again. Constantly for 4 months until I gave up.

beezlebubnicky · 07/03/2023 19:20

Hi @Ukmum25 irregular bleeding is very common on this pill, it can take months to settle. In my case, I switched to the Mirena coil when I wasn't getting better. Still having some bleeding on that, but not as bad as on desogestrel. Hope it will eventually stop my periods.

I stopped taking mine this is my second night not taking it so hoping for bleeding to stop in the next day or two

clasmummy20 · 07/03/2023 19:29

I have been on desogestrel for around 4 years now with about an 11 month break when I was pregnant. I have never bled on it until the past month where I have bled non stop. Doctor isn't concerned however not 'my normal'. Any suggestions? I have piled on 2 stone in the last 2 years which again is strange as I'm not eating anymore than usual.

I hope you find a solution OP. Bleeding constantly isn't nice.

Ukmum25 · 07/03/2023 19:50

what is your bleeding like now you’ve started bleeding for a month? I’ve seen so many comments about how this pill caused people constant bleeding everyone different times some 2 weeks some 6 months! I’ve stopped taking mine after only being on it for 2 weeks! I can’t put up with this constant bleeding!
