DS turned 1 last week and ended up in A&E with him due to croup, he was given a dose of steroids (dexamethasone) and after 24 hours the barking cough and stridor had gone! Fast forward to a week later and 4am this morning I woke to him with the barking cough and barking sounds when he was breathing in again. Also gagging when coughing which was not happening previously. Took him to GP this afternoon who said it is very unusual that the croup has come back after a week as it normally resolves itself after 2-3 days especially with the help of steroids. We were prescribed another dose of dexamethasone which I managed to get most of down him this evening so hoping this helps, he did throw up a little bit of his milk I would say about a tablespoon (drank about 6oz of a 9oz bottle) about half an hour or so afterwards after a coughing fit but I am hoping the steroid was firmly down by this point. Has anybody else experienced croup returning this quickly? Slightly concerned by the GP telling me how unusual it is and she had no idea why it would have happened again, his coughing had gone down to the bare minimum and just sounded chesty up until early hours of this morning and since then he has been coughing non stop poor thing.

Update - took DS to the GP again today and they suspect scarlet fever so have given him a 10 day course of antibiotics, hopefully this clears it up!
