Call back after blood test

Hi everyone,

My partner has been feeling out of breath, dizzy, chest pains etc especially when doing activities, so was sent for a blood test yesterday with an ecg coming up this week.

The Dr phoned today asking for us to call to discuss the blood test results but my partner was in work so missed the call. We phoned back but the Dr had finished for the day & they said a phone call is booked in for this Friday.

We’re worrying now thinking why have they contacted us so quick? The very next day. Something has to be abnormal?

Any advice/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

General blood work results are always pretty fast. It’s more specialised ones that take a while. So the speed isn’t too concerning… Things like anemia can cause the symptoms you mention, but try not to worry and know that it’s best to know, whatever it is. Easier said than done, I know!

The blood tests could be completely normal and Doc wants to discuss next steps as 'out of breath and chest pains' need to be investigated.
Or they could show it's an infection and he needs antibiotics.
I had to drag my kid out of school in an emergency once to get a second blood test as first results came back urgent medical need. His second results were completely normal! Phew!

A phone call on Friday means it’s nothing major. When I’ve had something potentially urgent I was called at 8am the day after the blood tests and told to get a taxi to hospital where they would be expecting me. Even then it turned out not to be the thing they were worried about.

KateBain · 13/12/2022 19:13

As others have said - perfectly normal for bloods to be back so quickly.

RedSnail · 13/12/2022 19:14

And generally my blood test results are back the same day, only particular slower tests are back next day

TheShellBeach · 13/12/2022 19:14

Blood tests are always back this quickly. Don't worry.

Rnm62 · 13/12/2022 19:17

Wow, thanks so much everyone for the fast replies. Really appreciate it.
This is what they tested for.

Those are all simple baseline blood tests, OP.

I imagine they're all normal (or near enough) and there's nothing urgently needed over the weekend.

Rnm62 · 13/12/2022 19:23

Thanks for the reassurance. Appreciate it.

And if the GP is fine with leaving it until Friday to discuss it, you can bet there's nothing wrong. Or nothing that can't easily be fixed.

Rnm62 · 13/12/2022 19:28

That’s a good point, thank you!

Was just going to say it wasn’t the Dr who actually booked the call in, we phoned back as we were told to but the Dr had finished for the day so it was the receptionist who booked the phone call in. We could even get a call from the Dr herself tomorrow but I know she isn’t in every day of the week so that may be why it’s been booked in for Friday. It’s the waiting that’s the worst!

Do you have the NHS app?

my husband had a blood test recently and we can see his results there.

you can scan the results and see if any say not within the normal range.

obviously, this could lead to you panicking over something until you speak to the doctor, so many might not recommend it.

Bluebellsand · 13/12/2022 19:39

Last year, the receptionist called me and made a same day appointment with a gp. I found it slightly alarming, so I asked her for my results. She said she could email it to me if I asked via email. Or come in with photographic id and she could hand it over.

I said I rather prepare questions before hand so I emailed her and got my results back. Turned out, I needed to adjust my thyroid medication.

carefulcalculator · 13/12/2022 19:41

You can go in and ask for the results, then you can see if they are in normal range.

I would guess that if the Dr needed to speak to you urgently they would not be happy to wait until Friday for the call.

It is horrible waiting though, I hope you get good news Flowers

Rnm62 · 13/12/2022 19:45

I do but I’m not sure how to use it to see blood results etc haha.

It will be OK.

My mums cousin once had some kind of vomiting condition with other symptoms and went to GP after couplen if days who did a blood test. At 2am she was woken by ambulance and police insisting she came into hospital..She turned out to have something

A)nasty
b) Infectious
c) unpronounceable

I think it will be OK if they're happy to wait until Friday

SunshineBoy · 13/12/2022 19:53

I had the exact same symptoms and got a call the next day after blood tests. They said I was anemic and I had iron tablets prescribed.

it doesn’t mean it’s something really terrible. If they booked an appointment for Friday it’s not likely to be noted immediate contact or anything on the file.

Rnm62 · 13/12/2022 20:11

I’m thinking anaemia as my partners had problem with that in the past. Had to have b12 injections & folic acid tablets.

Cor, that sounds dramatic. I’m imagining her being out in a plastic isolation tent like ET and Elliott. She must have been panicked.
