Varifocals? Contacts? Surgery? I'm new to all this. Help appreciated

I've been wearing reading glasses for close-up work for a couple of years now. All fine.
Recently I noticed my distant vision being a bit blurry, went to an optician and got some prescription glasses for distance too.
I'm not really getting on with wearing the distance ones and I'm not that keen on wearing glasses all the time so would rather not go for varifocal glasses.

Wondering what my options are now and will be very grateful for anyone's experience/advice.

Varifocal contacts? Does anyone have experience of these?
Or would it be better first to try contacts for distance and stronger reading glasses when I need them?

Surgery is also an option but seems a bit excessive as my eyesight isn't that bad.

Not sure where to go for advice and thought someone here may be able to help steer me in the right direction

I'm late 40s if that makes a difference.
Many thanks!
