Antibiotics and alcohol

Antibiotics say " we advise you not to drink alcohol while taking this medication". No justification given. So how am I supposed to make an informed decision when I am at dinner with neighbours tonight? It is a rare opportunity to drink alcohol socially (still not quite ready to sit alone in house drinking glass of wine).

Some antibiotics when mixed with alcohol can make you vomit, especially Metranidozol as they are very strong.

Some antibiotics make you ill if you have alcohol, but those ones usually tell you that explicitly. Alcohol reduces the effectiveness of al abs though, so that may be what they mean?

See, this is the sort of thing I need to know. Am on doxycycline (tetracycline group)...will I vomit?

just looking in the BNF for you. I know metronidazole makes you seriously vom.

fletchaaarr · 01/02/2008 15:53

link here doesn't mention alcohol (I am not medical person though!!)

mosschops30 · 01/02/2008 15:55

doesnt mention in the BNF but thats not to say you wont react.
They dont like you to drink on antibiotics cos you pee them out quicker so dont stay in the system and some of them can exacerbate alcohol (1 vodka = 3 vodkas lol)
However I know the warning is very specific on metronidazole.

I would phone your pharmacy and ask them, they will know best

So, the risks are:
1 - vomit
2 - pee out ab quicker so less effective
3 - 1 vodka = 3 vodka effect

So my mitigating controls will be:
1 - um...maybe a test beer at home ?? Don't wnat to upchuck all over next door neighbours!
2 - I took them at 11am and won't be drinking until 7-8 pm, so that shoudl be ok shouldn't it?
3 - avoid vodka . (be careful and maybe just have 1 or 2 glasses of wine, with food)
