Blood in urine

My ds (46) has had blood in urine for a couple of weeks and after a blood test to check for infection he was told today that he would be put on the two week urgent referral. He is of course panicking because his older brother was diagnosed with kidney cancer 4 years ago. Ds1 had a kidney removed and apart from a scan once a year he is doing fine.

How do I help ds2 cope with the time until his first appointment. When ds1 was diagnosed he was referred because the doctor thought he had an infection in his left kidney but the scan showed that his right kidney was cancerous. He didn’t tell anyone after his first scan but I happened to ring on the day he heard that there was a problem so he let me know.

I know that it would be awful if ds2 has cancer but at the moment I am of course thinking not again and the time waiting for a diagnosis is actually the worst time.

If anyone has had blood in urine could they let me know if they found other reasons and that cancer is not the only reason for the blood.

Thanks.
