Intense hip pain

Mt dad has suddenly developed intense hip pain. He is 85 and usually pretty mobile. He has a hip replacement about 11 years ago and the pain is in the same hip. He says he is fine when lying down and turning from side to side but has intense pain when walking, standing up, sitting and walking up stairs - basically doing anything weight bearing. It's sufficiently painful that his fingers were shaking for about 10 minutes after coming downstairs. He is not a complainer. There was no obvious trigger to the pain starting

Because he is being ridiculously stubborn, he won't properly talk to me about it and won't consider going to a & e. He is going to try to talk to his GP tomorrow. When he rang them on Friday, he only managed to speak to a nurse, who said if it was still bad after a few days, he could maybe go for an x-ray.

Any ideas what the hip pain may be?

Dad looks after my mum who has severe dementia. They have a live in carer, but due to the severity of my mum's needs, looking after her is a two-person job. Obviously, with Dad in so much pain, they are one person down and Dad has spent the last two days sleeping. If this turns out to be a long term issue, things are going to be incredibly difficult. I'm here this weekend but live two hours away, so won't be able to provide regular back up.
