Help stop my child coughing!

My 3 yo is almost permanently ill in winter with colds and lingering cough. He is going to the dr tomorrow but I can't stop him coughing! I have put him to nap with extra pillows so he is raised and have given cough mixture and even resorted to vicks on soles of feet with socks last night!

Any cough remedies that work please share!

We have a humidifier that we use at night if the DC are suffering with a cough. Then they seem to be able to sleep, and that helps them get better. We've got the Vicks one, and you can put a blob of vapour rub in the top as well. That does seem to help, too. Ours is from 2014 but I think the newer version has the same. We leave a window slightly open in their room when it's on and that reduces the damp!

Sympathies, toddler coughs are the pits! Hope he feels better soon.

Does he have asthma? It sometimes presents as a cough, and if so no cough cures will do anything about it.

That's what I'm wondering. Hope to see a respiratory consultant soon.

It's all day and night but caught from when we get colds and he just doesn't get better for weeks on end. Then catches another from nursery or us.

Is it a real sickness/virus kind of cough or a dry cough?

When DD was about that age she had a persistent dry cough that wouldn't go away and several GPs kept telling me she was still recovering from a virus and to give it time. Then I saw a paediatrician who immediately told me she had allergic rhinitis which meant mucus was dripping into her throat which irritated it and caused her to cough.

The paediatrician prescribed us with antihistamines and DD's cough completely stopped after 2 days!! I was so relieved and also irritated at the other doctors. Don't let them fob you off, if your child doesn't improve go and seek a second opinion.

I don't know what specialist to ask for? Paediatrician or respiratory?

Try an antihistamine. One of my kids coughs a lot with allergies. And then, give Sambucol daily, its magic stuff and my kids are hardly ever sick when i remember to give it to them regularly.
