Hello! So I was having dinner at my MIL’s and I ate some Turkey liver. I didn’t realise until after eating it that it is no recommended in pregnancy due to high levels of vitamin A.

I have read different guidelines, and it is interesting. The UK really say it should not be consumed. Other countries like America suggest a limited amount up to 75g per week.

What I would really like to know is, would consuming some liver on a one off cause problems for my baby?

Any advice, or words of reassurance would be appreciated?
Thank you☺️

Recommended and prohibited are very different things. Having some liver with dinner is extremely unlikely to have caused any issues so please don't worry.

Women become pregnant and carry healthy babies to term everyday in every country in the world. All of the those countries have varying degrees of advice. But it is just that. Advice. Not rules to live your life by.

I ate a couple of massive bowls of my mum's chicken soup before realising I was pregnant with my son. I made sure I ate the big bits of liver too (I love it). He is 9 years old now and absolutely fine. Don't worry. One occasion at 5 weeks isn't going to harm your baby.

At this stage the baby is in yolk sack, and not placenta, so not sharing your blood supply. It’s fine!!

When I had ds we were supposed to eat liver regularly when pregnant. 3 years later with dd I was astonished to discover it was advised not to eat it in case you ate so much you overdosed on vitamin a. I don't think it's going to be a problem for you.

I had intense cravings for liver when I was pregnant and happily munched on it several times a day at times. I just assumed it was because I was a bit low on iron and cracked on. No ill effects for me or the babies.

I was advised to eat liver when I was pregnant with both of mine. They're now 23 and 25 xxxx

When I was pregnant my midwife recommended half a Guinness 3/4 times a week to help with the anaemia 😁. It’s good to be careful but I don’t think one instance is going to have a seriously detrimental affect.

As others have said... 25+ years ago we were advised to eat liver when pregnant... I ate loads (now a veggie :D) Kids were fine...
You aren't going to overdose on Vit A on one meal!!

I think you need to forget about it. It won't have done any harm.
