Colonoscopy

Am having a colonoscopy in a few weeks and currently trying to decide if I opt for sedation or not. Has anyone had one without ?

I had one around 5 years ago and had the sedation but this time it's more complicated as young DC at home and my appointment is later in the day. If I don't have sedation I can get myself home and leave straight away after .. sedation means staying and needing to sort a way home.

Is it awful without ?

I've had it without. I was supposed to have sedation, but Nurse told me on the day I'd be fine without and removed the option. It was pretty unpleasant I have to be honest, but is over quite quickly. I definitely wouldn't be opting to do it without sedation again though.

Dont do it. Arrange for someone to pick you up/ look after the kids for that day.

gerispringer · 20/11/2022 07:16

I mean don’t do it without sedation

I've had a sigmoidoscopy without sedation - it was and I don't use this lightly - traumatic and couldn't quite be completed. My DS has regular colonoscopies - HAVE SEDATION.

I’ve had with, without and with extra sedation, I’m fine really with either but best with in my experience

Hope it goes well x

@Ljc1985 how did you get on? Mine is tomorrow.

Ljc1985 · 25/06/2023 11:03

Absolutely fine! So glad I opted for sedation! A lovely relaxed sort of snoozed day dreamy feeling and felt nothing

Thank you, glad it went well. I've just started the moviprep. I've had 2 times 2 dulcolax too which had me on the loo sweating and in a lot of pain at 4.30 from the first 2. Nothing yet from the second 2 but I don't think it's far off. I've added lime juice and ice and have a straw. I'm hanging it due to constipation and a positive fit test and and really worried about the outcome.

I found it quite uncomfy with sedation I didn’t have to stay too long afterwards tbh I’d get someone to pick you up I felt really crappy and drained afterwards. Especially the second time. Staff were lovely though really kind

I had GA didn't have the option not to in France. Very glad I did.

I'm having a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy-lucky me! I've got someone to collect me and my ds is being collected from school and looked after. My Dd is 14 and will be fine by herself after school and will help get her and ds something to eat.
They give midazolam and fentenyl here so I'll be away with the fairies.
I've finished one 250ml glass of prep and my innards are gurgling. Onto the second glass of joy now.
I've got my own thread but it's very quiet so hope OP doesn't mind me hijacking her old one.
I'm mainly terrified of them finding cancer. As im sure everyone is who is referred u set the 2 week wait. I'm fit and healthy and no issues really apart from constipation since having covid badly in October and then changing my diet to be healthier and lose some weight. My bmi was 26 so not a lot of weight to lose but now I've successfully lost it through cutting my intake and I'm reading my exercise. No unintentional weight loss. I have endometriosis and get javelin arse during my periods and sometimes at other times but that's been for decades. My fit test was positive at 13.9 but the hospital have said that's not high as they can be in the hundreds.

Good luck @painintheargh - I had endoscopy this week w midazolam and pethedine - it’s all very hazy!!
ivr also had a colonoscopy - the prep is by far the worst part and it wasn’t even as bad as I thought it would be. I drank it cold through a straw.

I have had it with and without . I had gas and air .I have to say although I coped without it took far longer and was uncomfortable .(I am told I have a strong pain threshold)I wondered as I wasn't relaxed if that contributed to this.Since then I plump for sedation every time .I am relaxed but can still follow the procedure and last time it was completed very quickly .I recovered almost immediately and was dressed and having tea and a biscuit very quickly and my husband picked me up within the hr .Have sedation.I wouldn't have one without it again.Hope that helps and good luck.

The prep is by far the worst bit! I spend ages planning my first meal

Glad it went OK. I've had three without sedation - the first two were absolutely fine but the third was awful. I don't know whether it had any bearing, but it was a Saturday morning catch-up list after Covid postponements and then a cancellation, and they seemed to want to get it done as quickly as possible and had loads of people waiting. The nurse inflating me seemed to think she was blowing up a paddling pool, and the nurse at the other end made a huge deal of the fact that they'd got 'all the way round' in six minutes, although it felt a hell of a lot longer! I think I'll have the sedation next time.
