Period pains suddenly MUCH worse - WTF?!

I'm 44. Periods have been more painful in recent years which I put down to age. But got period yesterday afternoon and today it is excruciating, on a completely different level to anything I've had before. I have the usual cramping and back pain, but also a sharp continuous pain on my left side (ovary?) which is so bad it has me doubled over and on the brink of tears. I can't get a dr appt today so am doing ibuprofen and paracetamol, fetal position and 2 hot water bottles, hopefully it'll ease off enough to get me through my meetings then I can curl up again. DH will get me some ibuprofen with codeine to take later. Is this just what I can expect from perimenopause? Have I broken something inside? This can't be normal! Anyone experienced similar?

No experience when it comes to perimenopause here I'm afraid.
I was just wondering whether there is a possibility you could have a UTI there too? Xx

it could be unrelated and be your appendix or a twisted ovary or burst ovarian cyst?

I've never had a UTI before - what are the symptoms?

It's eased off a little with ibuprofen, paracetamol and hear so I think is definitely period pain. But bloody hell, so so painful 😢

Have a quick Google of a UTI.. though not every symptom you would necessarily experience. I don't get common UTI symptoms until it hits my kidneys then I get horrendous pain in where my kidneys are in my side.
It could be something completely unrelated to period, so keep an eye and be careful, hopefully it's just a period which still isn't nice and I hope the pain passes soon xx

I had this 3 months ago. It was so bad I called an ambulance. I'm 49. By the time the ambulance arrived 4 hours later it had gone pretty much with paracetamol. Still no idea what it was. Left side.

Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) is a condition of it's own. It can be debilitating and worsen for no apparent reason and sometimes there's no cause they can find. Another poster started a thread about bleeding and pain, with another poster suggesting endometriosis could be to blame.

Keep an eye on it. If it's stopping you from being able to speak a coherent sentence, get it checked out. When it comes to your pelvic region, you should not be feeling pain there. So definitely if in doubt tell your gp.q
