Could this be ringworm?

My son (11) has developed this rash on his neck.
I believe it could be ringworm and have been using clotrimazole 1% cream for 2 weeks now with no changes (if anything it’s beginning to look worse).
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do next to clear it? Or if it does look like ringworm? He suffers badly with eczema.
The first picture was 2 weeks ago. The second picture is now.
Thank you in advance!

I dont see any pictures
There's a type of eczema that looks like ringworm - discoid eczema

fanontonight · 17/11/2022 22:25

My son has had ring worm and it looked more like pin prick spots in a circle.
These photos look more like patches of dry skin/eczema to me, I'm not a doctor though,

SameToo · 17/11/2022 22:39

I can’t see pictures either but have been suffering with a blight of ringworm in the family for two bloody years! You want thrush cream. 3 times a day for a week or longer.

dementedpixie · 17/11/2022 22:46

Ringworm tends to form a ring with normal skin in the middle rather than being the same colour all over

Thank you for your replies!
I’m not too sure what I’ve done with the pictures but I will try upload them again now.

I am so sorry to hear your son had it too!
I did wonder if because it’s hasn’t even started to clear it could be something else. Thank you for your message!

@Alixmx Those patches look like my discoid eczema, especially if he already has eczema. If that’s the case he’ll need a steroid ointment. Mine are very stubborn even using prescription cream, they pale but don’t go altogether. I would get the GP to have a look.

StarboysMum · 17/11/2022 23:48

Just to say I can see the photos in your OP and later post.

I had ringworm on my leg once. There was a red spot in the middle, then a definite ring around it. It didn’t look like this. I had Daktacort cream from GP which I applied twice a day, it took about 6 weeks to go.

Alixmx · 28/11/2022 21:29

eurgh - I will contact a doctor tomorrow but does anyone have any idea what this could be. I contacted the doctors before about my sons neck and they prescribed timodine which is a steroid cream with anti fungal in it (I believe) as I don’t think they were too sure from pictures - that cleared the neck after using Clotrimazole cream for 2 weeks with no response. He is struggling at the moment with his eczema so I’m wondering does this look like ringworm or eczema. I have no idea!
thank you in advance 🙂

@PurplePumpkinDream I’m sorry to hear you suffer with eczema too! It can be so uncomfortable! 😔
we did in the end get prescribed a steroid cream with anti fungal in it which means I still have no idea what I am treating although this did clear it up after a week (although as you’ve said there is still pale marks)
i am going to contact a doctor again tomorrow and hopefully have someone take a look - I have uploaded a few new pictures of my sons arm please could you take a look and see if this looks like discoid eczema too . Thank you! X

Ringworm or something else? Been to see GP today after rash got bigger on DDs hip. She had been diagnosed with Pityriasis Rosea on back and trunk couple of weeks back and this appeared on hip at the same time. Pityriasis and rash now faded but this one on hip is bigger and now looks like this. GP wasn’t sure and asked another two doctors at the time who have decided on ringworm? No pets in household and no one else has similar.

Could be discoid eczema

BBFOYLM · 05/02/2023 18:19

Do you think? It’s so hard to tell isn’t it when they all look the same! He’s been prescribed fungal meds but nothing working. It appeared when he had an eczema flare up and has just got larger and larger😫thanks so much for your reply xx

PurplePumpkinDream · 05/02/2023 23:13

Yes could be discoid eczema, a couple of my patches got really large. If it is then antifungal won’t work, not sure if anything works really in my experience. Just takes ages for mine to pale.

Hazelwood63 · 21/08/2024 11:52

Hi @BBFOYLM I know this thread is over a year old, but I just wondered if you ever solved the mystery of your son's rash. I'm trying to find answers to a similar case at the moment, and would appreciate any help. Thank you.
