Could it be shingles with no spots?

Im in horrible pain on my right back/side.

The last time I felt pain this bad was shingles which was higher up on the left and was only diagnosed when literally 5 spots appeared. Anti vitals taken, it went away. Overall from what I hear of other cases quite mild. Four years ago.

GP perplexed as its lower than kidney. Says can't be shingles without spots. Yet last time one 5 spots and they appeared after several days. This time it's been 5 days since pain started.

Has anyone had shingles without spots?

Yes, it's called 'zoster sine herpete' (ZSH)

It still responds to antivirals.
