can i avoid anti-biotics?

started with tonsilitus yesterday morning. Today i feel okayish, havent had a fever yet. Was wondering if I can beat it without anti-biotics and if there is anyway to start fighting it now before it gets too bad.....

Salt water gargled is fantastic for a throat infection, got rid of mine, and a warm scarf wrapped round your neck, why dont you pop to your pharmacy and see what they suggest, hope you get better soon

I've got it at th moment too, my sympathy to you. I feel like I have broken glass in my throat and my ears are so painful. the pain goes right up the side of my head and my neck is so swollen I look like a hamster!

I tried to wait for a few days rather than get antibiotics, but have to say now I've had two days worth, the pain is so much better and I am being to feel less tingly.

I take it you have done the gargling with aspirin? I got some propolis from Holland and Barratt and have gargled with that, it is quite soothing after aspirin and it seems to help. The lady in our H&B is very knowledgeable and always checks her books and propolis is recommended for tonsilitus.

yes you can try .. I also don't have anti-biotics

i'd try gargling with soluble aspirin too(as long as you have no stomach problems like ulcers) - but do keep a close eye as last year i had such a sore throat that my glands came right up and could hardly swallow by the time i got to the doctors - ab's worked within 24 hrs and i suddenly realised how sick i'd been.

I'm normally a drug-dodger too but agree with bundle, my tonsillitis got so bad the only time I had it that a VERY SENIOR PERSON in my workplace found me slumped unconscious over my keyboard - I'd passed out. Do keep an eye on it, Fio. Hope you manage to stay off the ABs.

To try to fend it off try :
Gargling with soluble aspirin or paracetamol.
Anaesthetic/anti-bacterial throat lozenges - merocaine et al.
Anaesthetic/anti bacterial throat spray.
Warm drinks - tea, honey and lemon
Rest.

right am back from boots and health shop. But do I gargle and then swallow the asprin mix? sorry if I am being stupid here, brain is not working properly atm
