Reliable thermometer

What's a reliable thermometer. I currently use and ear thermometer about 13 or 14 years old. I got a tip before about using it and it said to take a reading in one ear, than the other ear and then back to the other ear and the average over the 3 readings because the temperature can vary between the two different ears.

I have a condition where I am prone to infections. I rely on my thermometer to monitor my temperature. There are times when I could be feeling well enough aside from a slight pain that's slight and often mildish and when I check my temperature it might be a low grade fever or sometimes it might be over 38 too. Basically the thermometer helps me establish a flare up more easily.

This afternoon I checked my temperature like I do and all three readings were different:
37.5 in right ear
37.8 in left ear
37.4 in right ear.

The 37.8 caught me off guard so I did it again and then it was
37.6 in left ear
37.5 in right ear
37.4 in left ear

It all varied throughout those few minutes.

Does anybody else find an ear thermometer can behave in a similar way.

Basically I need something more reliable.

I don't like ear or forehead ones.

The ones that go under your tongue and under a child's armpit are the most accurate.

We have a forehead one, an ear one and a under tongue and armpit one.

Most reliable I would say is the under tongue and armpit one. I've always had this one used to me in hospital stays too. Though I know our GP uses an ear one.. which we do sometimes use and can be a bit hit and miss.
Forehead one is a load of crap in my opinion.

I mean, the most reliable ones are the ones that go up your bum bum….

Hi @DPN Thanks for your post. I'm sorry to hear about your condition. You might find this article on the best baby thermometers useful as many on the list are suitable for the whole family. The guide is based on the recommendations from Mumsnet users and the scrutinisation of consumer reviews. Do let us know if you found it useful.
