Post partum migraines and blurred vision

Does anyone have any experience of this ? 12 days post partum after c section and i keep getting migriane auras . I see a neuro and have done for years due to diagnosis of chronic migraine .
Normally I get migraines consrnstly but get auras probably about 1 a month on everagr . In past 10/12 days I’ve had it four times .
last night I had a scare and my whole left eye went blurry not like an aura and I visited eye e &e . Said eyes looked fine only thing they said was I had dry eye patches on left eye and to use drops and go back in a week . Vision still blurry . Anyone experience this ? Still feel scared even though I’m reassured my eyes look healthy and could potentially be a hormone thing especially with my history . Any advice or where to go best if my vision still isn’t right ?! Doctor seemed to be unsure of diagnosis but he said stroke was not something he was considering

I'm also a chronic migraine suffer and sometimes they turn hemiplegic.
I almost every migraine attack, get auras and lots of problems with sight prior to and during a migraine attack - to all of which my eyes are completely healthy.. I can lose my sight in 1 eye at any given time for a variable amount of time, one minute I'll be fine, the next it goes completely.
Adding a c section/anesthesia to the situation only 12 days ago, plus all the hormones going on aswell, it could still well be that causing lasting effects. Are you getting migraines at the same time as these more often auras?
Given you've been checked over I wouldn't panic. But it may be worth a 2nd opinion at your GP just so they can keep a close eye on you and that it's noted, and if they recommend you seeing an optician or something then I imagine they'd also advise that themselves. I hope you start to feel better soon. Xx

@Adeleex thanks for reply . Yes so last night after the vision loss which is still there today I got a headache then today I got a classic aura aswell . It seems like I’m just getting a flurry of different types of aura which I’ve been told could be a hormone crash . Eye was checked , normal pressure , optic nerves fine and vision was normal . Only thing they found was patches of dry eye so they prescribed drops which they said may help . Just hoping it’s not going to keep happening . I’m used to the headaches being daily but the aura is something I don’t get as often normally . Also bad feeling like my voice is echoing which again been told is another migraine variant x

Have they checked you for eclampsia??

MissAtomicBomb1 · 06/11/2022 15:49

I had up to 5 visual auras a day starting around day 4 post birth (also c section).
My GP was concerned so called the obstetrician at the hospital. They said it was most likely a hormone crash but I had to be checked over by my GP who also prescribed beta blockers (didn't work!)
Things did gradually return to normal as my hormones settled down. It took a few months though. Hope things get better for you soon, it's hard when you have a baby to care for too.

I'd never had a migraine until I had ds & then had awful ones for nearly two years after, they then stopped as suddenly as they started.

Dox9 · 06/11/2022 15:51

How is your blood pressure? I was readmitted to postnatal ward on day 5 after a c section due to hypertension. They kept asking me about headache and blurred vision every hour while I was in.

Lkakpk · 06/11/2022 15:59

@violetcuriosity no not been checked . Bp has not been high though

@MissAtomicBomb1 how long did it last ? It’s awful isn’t it . What did obstetrician say just it was hormones ? I will ring gp

Do you see the HV at all anymore?
I'm out the loop since I had my 3rd 3 years ago, not sure if it's changed x

Adeleex · 06/11/2022 16:02

I meant midwife. Not HV sorry x

Bossa09 · 06/11/2022 16:10

Are you still on the anti inflammatory tablets they give you after a c section? (Can’t remember how long you’re supposed too). I had to stop taking Diclofenac promptly because I would have a pounding sore head at one side. Midwife seemed surprised at this but it stopped afterwards.

Boxerbird · 06/11/2022 16:18

Have you had your iron checked? I developed migraines after second child and had them on and off for years (as well as aura, and sometimes just fuzzy vision and lightheadedness). Turns out I was anaemic and iron tablets sorted me right out. Now take low dose OTC supplements and haven’t had a migraine in years. But it took over 5yrs to identify the real reason so worth a quick blood test?

Lkakpk · 06/11/2022 16:36

@Adeleex I have but I find she’s not very clued up in medical things . I’m under neuro May speak to them tomorrow . Just frustrating

@Bossa09 no not on anything now . Day 11 post section .

Lkakpk · 06/11/2022 16:37

@Boxerbird I was low in iron throughout pregnancy but that seems to have been rectified . Might be worth another blood test

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and went to triage yesterday with aura, flashes and migraine turns out I'm really anaemic, crazy what it can do!

if they didn’t discuss with obstetricians when you visited ED it’s probably worth getting in contact with MW/labour ward if it’s outside your normal pattern of headaches/auras. Hopefully it’s ‘just’ migraines, and your posts aren’t typical for either of these things, but pre-eclampsia can develop post-partum and a post-dural puncture headache after a spinal/epidural can cause visual disturbance as well as headache - it’s probably worth talking to someone with experience of both to at least consider them if it’s not been considered already.

Yes the obstetrician put it down to the sudden removal of the placenta triggering a crash in hormones (mine are very much linked to hormones - usually occur mid cycle). It's going back a couple of years but I think they lasted a couple of weeks. My period came back 4 weeks post partum 😥. I was also anaemic and on lots of anti biotics for a uterus infection. I think all of this combined with lack of sleep probably didn't help with the migraines.
Just to add, the obstetrician was adamant that I should be throughly checked over by my GP just in case it wasn't migraine related e.g high BP so make sure someone sees you!

If it's any consolation I hardly get any now, prob one every few months so they do settle down eventually!
