Sick bug , how long for being sick dd2 has been every 30-40 mins for over 13hrs

dd1 started at 3am this morning and is going longer between it. Ive stopped myself being sick during the night as had to lay with dd2 (18mths)and hold her up each time since 10pm last night, but have had awful stomach upset now and shaking and that strange hot feeling.

Theyre both laying on the floor cushion here with buckets in front. Im terrified to eat , have already lost 2lbs overnight!

I cant believe it , back to back illness for me and my girls since Jan 07 , starting with the same blardy thing then as right now!

Well theyre both eating crackers and dd2 just brought up all the water she just drank. The 3rd load of sick towels etc is getting ready.

Please let it stop soon, weve had such a rotten time of it all of us.

(((((Melsy))))) I'm so sorry, it sounds absolutely grim. Even without just having had a load of illness in january.

I don't know what to say, other than my friend has just had a D&V bug (there are so many) and the V lasted about 12 hours. But then again, I think the younger kids tend to have a worse time with actually throwing up than older kids or adults.

Have you got any rehydration stuff in? Diarolyte, or similar? If you can get the girls, and/or you, to take a little (not lots, it'll come straight back up) water with Diarolyte in it, its more likely to be absorbed by the body than plain water.

And if you get too sick to cope, or it goes on too long/hard, or you're worried about dehydration for any of you, PLEASE yell for help: NHS Direct/GP (if they'll come out)/Mumsnetters nearby, anyone!

Really hope it passes soon, xxx

Elibean · 29/01/2008 13:24

ps Google says D&V usually lasts about 24 hours, but some of the bugs can last longer - personally, if dd was throwing up that often for more than 24 hours, I'd defo get some medical feedback in case of deydration. Do you know how to check for signs of it? You probably do, but in case: if she's not crying wet tears anymore/ if you gently pinch a ridge of skin on back of her hand and it stays up for more than a second or two/ if you press her fingernail and the pinkness takes more than 2 seconds to come back into it - those are 3 or them, there are more but I can't remember them, sorry.

Good luck...

thank you for messages Elibean , Im ok ish for now , just exhausted mentally, physically, every which way. I just wiped another 2weeks fron my life in bed on pills as recovering from slip disc and crack rib, (although was able to drive yesterday) , dd1 has had a difficult 2007 with adontonsilectomy and continual illness before then. Now we have another blardy week wiped AGAIN.

We just stupidly thought 2008 would come and clean the slate for us to start living normally again. How ridic is that really.

Im a little worried about dd2 , but she has been drinking from her cup of water quite a lot, just a lot coming up too. Thank you for the list of signs, when she wakes up will have a look.

Ive got achey cramps.

dd1 has just woken up in the front room ,think (hope) dh is in there with her shes very quiet. Dd2 is thankfully asleep on the floor cushion in front of me , couldnt chance her going in her cot alone.

OP posts:
melsy · 29/01/2008 16:43

Fingers and nails all fine on dd2, shes just not moved from the floor cushion unless to have water and then bring it up as soon as it hits her stomach . Shes just laying not moving just looking at me on sofa on here. Shes not eaten a thing since 2 crackers that came up around mid morn.

Dd1 has been able to keep cooked apple and toast and honey down. Making her boiled rice in a little stock.

Did dd1 have it first? If so, hopefully dd2 will start mending soon too - sounds like a 'fast' one, fingers crossed.

Suspect that any January/February is not going to be a turning point for clean slates where illness is concerned - but hope rest of 2008 is, for you!

Let us know how you all are, esp dd2, poor love; hope you get some sleep tonight.

melsy · 29/01/2008 20:23

Dd2 started 1st. Its nearly 24hrs.

dd1 safely tucked up in bed and seems just a bit worn out, but not been sick.

dd2's had some small sips of water and a little more cracker and been able to keep a little of it down so far. Weve just put her in her cot as she cant stay awake and will go and check her many times Im sure. It seemed as if her temp was going up, but I held her for a bit and she seemed to calm down and so did the temp.

She fast asleep for now , hoping none of her water and cracker comes up , feel upset to not have given her much more, worrying now about her going to bed empty. The whole dehydration thing is worrying me too, dont know how Ill sleep tonight , even though Im wasted and of course now worrying about msyelf getting it. Im awful when they are ill , loose all sense of proportion after having such nasty episodes with both of them and hospital.

oohhh yes may be after this we can have a clear run for the rest of the year. Thank you for checking in on us, means a lot this evening.

Don't feel bad, you've done exactly right thing not giving her more - its more important she keeps down a bit of water than eating/drinking more and throwing up! Maybe you can get a bit more water into her when she next wakes, I've heard giving them a wet facecloth to suck if they really can't drink from a cup/bottle can help. My 14 mo old dd loves sucking water from her toothbrush

Nothing worse than LOs being ill, except LOs being ill and being ill yourself: no one on the planet can keep hold of perspectives under those conditions

melsy · 30/01/2008 10:23

Took her ages to get to sleep and finally did around 10 ish I think , when dd1 started getting upset about tummy cramps , but a bavk rub soon helped that.

dd2 woke at 1am with slight temp , so we cooled her down , gave her some water , which came back up , gave her some more and a little calpol , which came back up , layed with her for a little and then put her back in bed , and she woke around 7.

Dd1 is bounding all over and seems fine.

dd2's been very still on the sofa in a litle duvet , eaten some dry cheerios and a little water and now onto some other dry cereal ! Ive managed to get a smile for 1st time in 2 days bless her. It'll be slow today , but hopefully shell get rehydrated somehow , not sure if I need something for it????? Ive asked my mum to go to the chemist and ask.

Im feeling quite ropey though and have a yuck taste in my mouth , uh ohhhhhhh.

Thank goodness both dds sound better! Hope you survive with a mild dose if anything - its usually the littlest who get the sickest, so there is a good chance.

If dd2 is eating/drinking again, she'll be fine hydration-wise - just give her water little and often, ditto food. Well done!

melsy · 30/01/2008 11:08

ahh thank you for checking in again. Im waaaaay stressed with some work things to and Im alone now today as dh has gone back into work , feeling very sorry for myself.

deffoo something not right with me have tummy cramps and feel hot and giddy.

OP posts:
Elibean · 30/01/2008 22:14

How are they/you now?

melsy · 31/01/2008 15:23

Just got back from A&E , had taken her to gp this morn as she had become more listless & floppy this morn and vomited 3 times all her water and dry cereal. Gp wasnt sure how to get fluids in her as he said she was borderline dehydrated. As she wouldnt have re hydration liquids at all,(fought with me and smacked it away , good sign I think) the nurse in a&e had me syringing 5ml water every 5 mins. Doc came along , agreed she was borderline, so not quite in need of a drip/admission, but told the nurse water alone would be useless, so they made up dyrolite with a load of sugary cordial and started that every 5mins in a syringe which she took.

Its such a simple little technique you almost feel silly to have not thought it through yourself.

They asked me what she loves eating and I said chicken soup, so theyve also recommended that later , syringing if I have to ,as the nutrients in the clear liquid will be really good for her electrolytes also.

Shes now in bed and they suggested giving her more dyrolite every half hour in her sleep !!Have to just see how she goes , as they said shell either respond or deteriorate at this stage.

After her taking all that in today , Im hoping she doesnt bring it all up when she wakes up like this morning .

I know I shud be positive, but I get these worries and anxieties and it helps me to express them sometimes rather than let them fester in my mind.

melsy · 31/01/2008 15:26

at at least dd1 has been able to go to school today.

Me however , Im not sure , Im feeling very dodgy; giddy and nauseous. Not sure its intense anxiety ,picking up on dd2 empathically or have a mild version of it also!!

Elibean · 31/01/2008 15:29

Ugh, Melsy, I'm sorry - thought she was on the mend. Good for you for taking her in, sounds as though you did it at just the right time.

Not surprised you feel rough, all that anxiety, stress and lack of sleep would be enough IMO - though not surprising either if you have a bit of viral illness going on too. Either way, the treatment would be the same - if it were available - rest!

melsy · 31/01/2008 16:01

aww lovely how you reply so quick , good have someone to talk to about it.

OOHHHH to rest and relax , would love a hot bath and a sleep and no interuption all afternoon and evening , feels selfish in wanting it right now. Theres just always so many things to sort out , as have back problems that have needed sorting with calls to hospitals etc and this darn supplier thing too. We have a trip dh and I alone abroad as a treat for having such a rotten year in a coupe of weeks , I so hope I can relax and calm down. Im such a worrier , Ill be all tight from worrying about my girls & also this clients outstanding order which should have been resolved this week , but instead I will have it hanging that whole time away AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaRGgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Need some luck this year , it was non stop hospital all last yr. Dh and I havent been away together sans kids since before being pregnant , (which I know is par for the course) , but it really has been horrendous beyond horrendous in all different ways with all sorts of nasties between us girls ; mental health, physical health etc.

Thank you for your well wishes x
