It's driving me mad!

Since Octoberish I've had swollen glands and feeling generally yuck. I keep getting the odd temperature as well but not all the time. One day I can feel pretty ok and no temp but the next it might well change and often does. A couple of times since then i've thought I was going down with something awful but then it lightens until very soon after.

Now i'm all itchy! Stupidly driving me mad itchy. It started Sat night and it's driving me to distraction. I have a very slight rash around my middle but i'm itching all over. I've tried anti-histamines and they've one nothing.

Do you think it's connected? I'm loathed to go to the doctors about such vague symptoms.

Thank you.

I've been on them for years though. I did ask my gp whether she thought it was due to them and didn't seem to think so.

I have to confess to having a small beer last night and my glands got huge! I think i need to avoid alcohol not that I drink that much these days anyway.

I feel so wiped out today too, I could honestly sleep now but obviously I can't.

Thanks again. x

Hmm well I ended up having 2 glasses of wine on Saturday night (it was a friends birthday) and I felt so much worse that night. I'm even more itchy now too, especially my lower legs to the point they're getting sore from the scratching I can't stop doing.

It's hard being positive when you're so itchy, i'm getting so irritable and snappy. I'm not hugely worried anymore now though, what will be will be. I just need to know what it is so I can cure this itchiness!

Having searched my cupboards i've just found some mild steroid cream, do you think I could try this?

You musn't drink alcohol with glandular fever - it makes you feel 10 times worse, absolute no no.

My teenagers have had GF recently and were really ill, poor things. No alcohol, no antibiotics.

3littlefrogs · 04/02/2008 21:10

Do you think the itching could possibly be a completely unrelated reaction to something else - new washing powder/fabric softner, or a food allergy that you haven't realised you have?

NewYearNewStart · 04/02/2008 21:13

I did wonder whether it was unrelated, I'd like to think it was really. I can't think of anything i've changed though or anything new i've eaten. I can't understand why the anti-histamines i've taken haven't helped too.

Presumably GP has done Liver function tests as well as the GF tests, so I am sure you will get an answer soon. You MUST go back promptly for the follow up/results.

NewYearNewStart · 12/02/2008 20:34

Got my results today.

It's not glandular fever
It's not an allergic reaction
My thyroid's fine
I'm presuming it's not anything sinister like hodgkins since the level that indicates anything going on was particularly low.
Liver function appears normal although one of the enzymes was abnormally low but she said she doesn't get concerned about low levels.

She thinks i'm 'just' run down, which whilst is partly a huge relief, wtf do I feel so awful still? I'm constantly knackered, my glands are still up (and she knows this and my skin is still really itchy. I'd hoped for an easily treatable non-sinister finding if i'm honest.

She did say to come back if it continues but for how long????

I sometimes get all over itching after a cold. It's a reaction to the virus. Not serious but VERY annoying.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 14/02/2008 17:48

NYNS - I was ill from the last week of Nov to the first week of Feb and still now get the symptoms if I allow myself to become too tired / stressed / run down.
Mine included a hospital stay, CT scans, all sorts of tests.
Doctors rule a viral infection, and they can lay in your system for a while and recur when you get run down / poorly with something else. i.e. my dd got sick with an upset tummy, I had the same thing, but a recurrance of my original symptoms iyswim

Get lots of rest, (prob easier said than done) eat lots of fruit, veg and vit c, see how you get on.

sassy19 · 06/11/2008 20:45

how do you feel now, i have similar symptoms so i wondered how you were feeling
