Umbilical hernia repair failure???

FancySomeChips · 27/10/2022 22:58

Had a mesh repair last year, but I have a bulge in my stomach, (not belly button, above it), which is sore/hurts if I wear clothes too tight or if I lean my stomach against something.

Anyone had this??
I thinking the mesh repair failed??

Have got a referral from the gp for a scan but I can’t get out of work to attend an appointment in the day and the radiographers only seem to work 9-4 which is ridiculous!
Had a scan of my ovaries/uterus etc by a gynae nurse and all clear.

@FancySomeChips hi I know it’s been a long time since you posted but how did this go? Did it fail or was it ok? Did you have a mesh?

FancySomeChips · 10/07/2023 09:21

Had the mesh, they’ve confirmed it didn’t work and I’m going for check ups and scans every few months because they’ve said it needs redoing. It has to get a certain level of bad before they will do it though. It’s a very apparent bulge above my belly button, not on my belly button as before. They’ve said tissue was sewn incorrectly basically and either it dies and gets reabsorbed or they fix it. They will prob have to fix mine as it’s big and gets painful when I’m due on because of swelling, but don’t know when.

@FancySomeChips I’m so sorry to hear this. Do you know which mesh they used?
I have just had the op via open surgery and it’s very swollen / uncomfortable but kind of wishing I had not had it done.

FancySomeChips · 10/07/2023 21:10

The swelling will go down, it just takes a while. Mine was open surgery too.
Hope you feel better soon. Drink lots of water and rest even if you feel ok, you will be healing for a longggg time.

@FancySomeChips do you remember how long you were healing for post op…?
i am four days in and feeling like why am i in pain, why does the wound hurt, why is my back hurting..? I guess it’s all normal ?

FancySomeChips · 11/07/2023 08:01

All normal. You’ll feel better and then forget and bend over for something and it’ll remind you. I was off work for 5 wks due to my type of job, have as much time as you need don’t rush it.

I had 2 hernias fixed on Saturday. Birth defects so was born with a navel the size of an egg.

going insane at the moment due to feeling bloated - I have issues with ED so really triggering. I can’t go to the gym to really struggling mentally but hope it will be worth it.

@FancySomeChips hi there … wanted to contact you to see how you’re doing? I think I have the same problem. I had a mesh repair but now I’m struggling with this lump under my belly button. A defect could be seen on the ultrasound but which scan is best to detect a mesh failure? How did you know yours had failed ???

FancySomeChips · 31/10/2023 03:12

I had one hospital appointment t when they just felt around and said “yep, it’s failed. We will monitor you in view to repair when needed- might be 5 wks, might be 5 years away”
They said I needed follow ups to monitor it yet 4 appointments have all been cancelled due to strikes, the consultants annual leave, consultants sickness etc.
they then sent a text asking to “opt in” and stay on the consultants list… I mean wtaf?! …. And they have me another appointment which they then cancelled with no reason given and last wk sent a letter offering a telephone appointment. I mean how are they going to monitor it down a telephone line?! Totally frustrating.
In the meantime it continues to grow. It can be uncomfortable when I’m due on and as I lose weight (unrelated, long overdue), I am paranoid it is noticeable to others.
