Has anyone got a good tried and tested remedy for ds's dry cough. he's 9 years old and has not even had a cold but has started with a horrible dry cough and he has a headache. i gave him paracetamol and a cool pack on his head (light fever too) but he's bothered by the cough most of all. Off school tomorro wby the look of it.

honey?

admylin · 27/01/2008 19:25

I've just given hima cup of cammomile tea with honey in and it seems to have helped abit, I hope he can sleep through - but I doubt it. Suppose I will try the pharmacy tomorrow morning.

honey, lemon, cammomile - a miracle cure I promise it works wonders

There was research recently that a spoonful of honey did as much good for children's coughs as medicines. Manuka honey is particularly good as it has antiviral and antibiotic properties. We use it for sore throats and coughs.

I also say honey is good. Also if he will eat it a good quality dark chocolate - I read the theobromine in it is more effective than codeine.

But the best thing in the universe is some medicine dd was given in the States on prescription (cardec dm). Its not available here but for her its an absolute miracle. I dread the day we run out of it. Might be worth the cost of the plane ticket to get it!

I know all about missing miracle medicine! We're in germany and I really miss having Boots the chemist to pop into. Here you have to hope the pharmacist gives you something good becaus eit's all behind the counter - even asprin or savlon (not that they even have savlon over here), simple things you really miss!

Anyway, dh is from India so he came up with a good home remedy last night. Ginger and honey tea - 2 inches of chopped fresh ginger boiled in water then sieved it and mixed with honey and ds took about 5 or 6 tablespoons of it when it was warm and he didn't cough from midnight to about 4am.
