Strep throat

My two girls, ages 5 and 2.5 have been under the weather for the past 10 days, with occasional fevers, runny noses and headaches. They also spent all of last week playing with their cousin (who had no symptoms). My kids seem to be feeling better today, but I just heard from my SIL that cousin has just been diagnosed with strep throat.

I called the docs and am waiting for a call back from the nurse regarding whether they need to be tested for strep throat.

But in the meantime, what are the symptoms? (Neither of them have had it before.) Could they have had it, passed it onto their cousin, and now be recovering? If they are on the road to recovery do they need to get tested and have antibiotics, or is it OK to let it take care of itself?

I haven't been feeling too fabulous the past couple of days either and now my throat feels a bit sore. Could be psychosymatic I suppose.

I had strep throat earlier this year, KatG, and felt dreadful. In adults it usually comes on very suddenly, is very painful indeed, like swallowing broken glass or razors (not just sore) and makes you feel really ill. You generally don't have any other cold symptoms. These sites tell you more about strep throat one and two. Hth and that you keep well.

That sounds promising, Sue, as in that I probably don't have it. The girls both do have it though, and in fact the youngest has a lot of fluid in both ears which would have become a painful infection if it wasn't caught today. So they both have their antibiotics, they're not allowed at school tomorrow, and hopefully we'll all be fine.

Thanks for your reply.
