Liver problems during and after pregnancy

Hello,
ai had itching around 25ish wks pregnancy, maybe later. LFTs normal and not sure if they checked bile acids, was never checked again despite itching continuing.
During induction I asked them to repeat them due to itching and they’re were abnormally high along with high bile acids. After delivery they eventually came down after a couple of weeks.

Since then (now 5 months postpartum) they’ve been up and down and I’m under a Hepatologist. I remained asymptotic until recently when itching restarted. Ultrasounds have been normal, now awaiting biopsy and MRI.

completely petrified and wondering if anyone has been through anything similar. Consultant isn’t really pointing towards anything and is unsure until more results are in. I’ve had loads of bloods so far like antibodies which are negative.

So scared for what my future hold and how long I’ve got with my children, I’m 33.

So you had ICP in pregnancy and they didn't treat it?

If it was that I'd guess you either have side effects/complications from that. Not a doctor of course but if the itching was only brought on in pregnancy and especially as 25 weeks all sounds like ICP.

Kst21 · 09/10/2022 13:34

Hepatologist doesn’t think it was ICP as I’m still having problems now but essentially yeah they never rechecked my bloods so I didn’t find all this out until I was being induced.

just in limbo until I’ve had the MRI at least and it’s all out of the blue so wanted to see if anyone had been through anything similar. I was hoping it was just ICP but seems like pregnancy just brought something to the surface that was lurking perhaps. Awful having to wait.

Hand hood for you.

I know my mum and sisters all had ICP who then needed a follow up blood test after 6 weeks I think it was to see if the levels had returned to normal. It could be the case if it was that and wasn't treated you need medication. It's not fair you're left in limbo xx

PinkButtercups · 09/10/2022 14:40

Hold* don't think you need a hand hood 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Also forgot to add! Back when my mum was pregnant they didn't test for it like they do now.
She only found out with my youngest sibling! Never had a follow up blood test and she is convinced it messed with her liver. And I think t it did too as it went untreated. She's recently had very itchy skin again and blood tests suggested everything was fine but it actually turned out her diabetes wasn't as controlled as she thought it was. Have they tested you for diabetes too?

Thanks for your reply 😊
Ive had some basic diabetes tests but nothing in depth. Waiting to see an endocrinologist as I have episodes of feeling like I’m having a hypo which has been going on for years. It all comes at once doesn’t it

Not sure if you'll see this ,,@Kst21 just wondering how it's going now? I had ICP in third trimester and still abnormal lfts after 5 months. Really worried..

Have you joined the ICP Birth & Beyond Facebook page? They're really helpful and may be able to answer some of your questions.
