Transfusion vs Iron Infusion

I have had two iron infusions previously, about a year apart, and now am booked in for a transfusion later this week. Is there any difference between the actual procedure of having them?
I've read a bit about what the difference between them is and from what I can gather an infusion is a longer term treatment that takes a bit longer to take affect but lasts longer whereas a transfusion works straight away but doesn't have the same long lasting affect. Is that correct?

The reason for this is I had a blood test about 12 days ago and I had a phone call the same day from a worried gp telling me my haemoglobin was at 40 when it should be 110 (when I looked at the results it actually said it was 65, so still low, by put my ferritin is at its lowest yet at 3!) This is all caused by heavy periods due to fibroids and polyps and am currently on the waiting list for a hysterectomy (I wonder if this will bump me up the list?)

Tbh, I’m not sure. I had ferritin of 2 earlier this year (also due to awfully heavy periods caused by uterine polyps). I had a couple of infusions but was never offered a blood transfusion but then my HB never went below 9. My levels after the infusion went up straight away and luckily, due to having an ablation a month later, have stayed higher.
I hope you manage to get it all sorted. Anaemia and heavy periods are awful.

@Septemberintherain its awful having such heavy periods. I had two units of blood via transfusion and by the next day felt much better, and wasn't as puffed out on the dig walk (previously I had to have a rest for a bit after walking up a bit of a hill). I did start to feel a bit fluey last night which is one of the side affects, but am sleeping better so far (probably jinxed it now) and don't feel as wiped. I need a blood test later in the week to see how much it has brought up my levels and to see if I need iron infusions as well.
