Can anyone describe the difference between a temperature rash and a meningitis rash?

Dr has been this morning and diagnosed tonsillitis. DD still has a very high temperature which I can't really get down. This morning dr checked as she said she had a stiff neck if she bent forward, he said it was the fever.

She now has a rash on her shoulder blade, its red but not raging and looks a bit like heat rash. Have done the glass test but don't really know what I am doing. Does this sound like a temperature rash to you?

you are looking for rash satying through glass.

meningitis rash is typically almost purple.

Do the glass test and report back.

like this

Roll the glass over the rash, push gently, if the spots are still visible then it could be a problem

if you are in ANY doubt take her back, please.

use the glass to put pressure over area of rash, check to see if it fades or diassapears. can also just use thumb and forefinger to stretch skin slightly where rash is ..... waht does it do?
High temps and virus often cause aches in nack area and discomfort when bending neck forward, often the glands are up as well.

Meningitis is a very rapid onset illness, child would find it almost impossible to put chin to chest, have a real problem with light, and rash is generally darker red, pin prick to start.

Thanks, the rash is staying , I think but it definitely isn't purple. It looks a bit like she has been standing in front of the fire too long.

You don't have to use a glass, you can just stretch the skin with your fingers, if it's disappeares it's OK, if not, get her to the hospital ASAP.
I hope she's OK

will go and do again, don't think I applied enough pressure.

they would rather you took her back to be checked if rash isn't going.you will not look silly.

It can happen so fast

lucy5 · 25/01/2008 13:56

It doesn't appear to be doing anything. Her glands are up though, which isn't unusual as she has had glandular fever and they come up quite regularly.

She has fallen asleep and her temperature has dropped slightly. I don't think the rash is as red as it was before. I think I just panicked myself. Thanks.
