Should I go doctors?

I’m going to start by saying I know you should only take antibiotics if needed and not for every throat tickle.

Onto the question - I have a history of chronic sore throats which resulted in my tonsils coming out 3 years ago (not fun time for an adult). Since then the frequency and severity of the infections have become less but when I get them I can get them pretty awful with loosing voice and painful swallowing and breathing. Now I usually wait a week of having it before going to the docs in case it’s just a passing viral infection but if it doesn’t get any better or worse I get an appointment.

Unfortunately this won’t be an option as tomorrow I am flying out for a work trip which means I’m out of the country until Sunday. This trip requires me to be talking a lot and interacting with our client and potential clients at one of our biggest industry events for extremely long days. I can’t go as I lobbied for a new position and this is my first outing in this role. So come hell or high water I will be there with a smile on my face. (For those that are worried I might infect someone I will be a safe distance behind a desk and have tested negative for covid)

So my question is should I call my docs today and tell them what is up and then get a prescription to take with me in case it gets worse or carry on with my normal routine of OTC solutions and good old salt water gargle.

Any advice appreciated!

Can’t go or can’t not go?

If you’ve lost your voice, won’t it be pretty pointless!?

My Dr wouldn’t prescribe under these circumstances. They follow the nice guidelines and I don’t think the situation you are describing would allow for a prescription.

However your Dr maybe different, can you buy OTC stuff before you go? Are you going to a country that has

Yeah I have already packed otc medication to take with me and carry on salt water gargling

Don’t get antibiotics, I don’t think they will help at all, you are describing recurring viral illness and even if you have bacterial tonsillitis antibiotics usually make very little difference to shorten illness for adults.

Rest your voice and try to eat and sleep well. Steam if you think there is any phlegm or mucus.
