Found lump in neck - worrying

NoodleDoodleDo · 18/09/2022 20:23

I have found a lump in my neck today. It's like it has come from nowhere and is actually visible. It isn't a spot or anything but a marble sized lump below the skin, rather than in the skin if that makes sense

I'm trying not to but can't help worrying

Is it over a lymph node? They can come up quite suddenly and alarmingly but it usually just means you're fighting a spot of infection or virus somewhere in your body. I rarely link the inflamed spots with an actual infection 😂 but they go down in 24-48hrs.

It could be a sebaceous cyst? Can you post a photo?

Thegroaninggurner · 18/09/2022 20:37

It could be absolutely anything, go to the Gp and get it checked. One of my children developed a lump on the inside of their leg it turned out to be cartridge absolutely nothing to worry about.

I had something like this for ages, over a year, pea sized and a couple of inches below my ear lobe. Everyone told me to get it checked out but I never got around to it. I got into the habit of wiggling it and slightly squeezing it to see if it had grown and one day accidentally squeezed it so hard it vanished. Within about 10 minutes I developed horrendous palpitations which lasted several hours. Ended up at a&e where they diagnosed a virus and the next day I developed tonsillitis. I've never felt so unwell. No idea what it was in the end, a cyst or boil? But I would recommend not fiddling with it and would advise actually getting it checked out!

So I had a lump on my neck appear just where my thyroid gland would be.
Following a biopsy and a partial thyroidectomy they have found cancer... But strangely the lumps themselves were totally fine the cancer was found in a completely different part.
Getting more surgery soon to remove the rest.
So don't wait please get checked out likely totally fine.

I'm not sure if its over a lymph node or not, I thought the nodes were more towards the front of neck. This lump is kind of back/side of neck - on the corner (if my neck was square!)

I had a calcified gland on the back of my neck for many years. It was a hard pea sized lump. It seems to be gone now weirdly. Not too far from where yours is but higher up. You couldn't see it though.

I got it checked by a doctor when it appeared. Your could be many things, you do need to get it checked.

I'm sorry to hear that JLQ but glad they found it. All the best for your surgery.

I will make an appointment on Tuesday

Yes, best to make a GP appointment ASAP just to put your mind at rest - although the odds are it is nothing serious.

TulipVictory · 18/09/2022 21:31

Does it move under the skin?

KangarooKenny · 18/09/2022 21:32

Is it squishy and rugby ball shaped ? If so it’s a lymph gland, but do get it checked.

1user · 18/09/2022 21:42

I had a fair size lump (ping pong ball size) embedded in my clavicle. It seemed like it was suddenly there but was well hidden unless I pulled my shoulders back. Ultrasound and then MRI diagnosed a Lipoma- which is essentially a fat lump. Had this removed.

There are lots of alternatives that it could be, but I would get it checked out asap.

NoodleDoodleDo · 20/09/2022 12:11

I went to GP this morning. She wasn't concerned by how it felt but I have been having occasional night sweats and generally very hot and sweaty during the day even when everyone else is cool.

She is sending me for an ultrasound and is going to review me in 2 weeks. If the lump is still there she is going to do an urgent referall to ENT 😳

Did you have any vaccines last week? I reacted to the flu jab one year with this - was sent for urgent chest X-ray, ultrasound etc. and was just an inflamed lymph node. It was only afterwards that I connected it with the flu jab

NoodleDoodleDo · 20/09/2022 13:29

No I haven't had any vaccines recently, nothing since the covid booster.....months ago

Does it feel soft or does it feel gritty and hard? If the doctor has felt it and is not concerned this should provide a little reassurance (but totally right to get it properly checked out). In my experience Doctors are quite used to knowing what sinister lumps feel like (as opposed to non sinister lumps such as cysts etc.)

I hope you get it seen soon and your mind put at rest.

Ds gave us all head lice, just about over them but noticed a lump just below my hairline on the rear right side of my neck. I am in therapy for terrible anxiety and this has just sent me into a spiral. I've convinced myself it's cancer and I threw up in panic.
Has anyone had any lumps associated with nits?
