Help! Not been for 5 days I think maybe more and I now feel really sick and haven't managed to eat much today. I have taken ducolax, lactose and a senna and none of them are working. Have taken 3 doses of lactose last night and today. Drank coffee, ate some chocolate but not working. Drank lots of water today. Now feeling uncomfortable. Pharmacy closed here on a Sunday. Any other otc suggestions I can get from a supermarket? Or home remedies please. Thanks

Lactulose? I’ve always found that pretty rubbish, I’d go with additional dulcolax rather than senna or lactulose.

Prunes definitely work, but probably a bit slow after 5 days of constipation, chia seeds are amazingly effective. A couple of tablespoons stirred into a small glass of water then quickly chugged down before the seeds start swelling. Good luck!

If you can feel the blockage try Warm (not hot ) coconut oil and a latex glove . Try to break up the bulk whist lubricant around it . My midwife told me this as I was awfully constipated with my first born .. not pleasant but effective . Best used in warm bath

Did you take two dulcolax. They are normally like dynamite.

Gingerkittykat · 18/09/2022 00:19

Laxido sachets are good but I think they are pharmacy only.

Suppositories help too.

KnickerlessParsons · 18/09/2022 00:39

Prunes are good. But I really wouldn't panic after only 5 days.

Linseeds and vitamin c tablets are my go to (years of IBS C!). Drink lots of water with the linseeds.

Hi op use glycerin suppository- insert into your bottom - if one hasn’t worked in an hour - use another - I’d stop taking the others apart from lactulose.

If I'm constipated (and I often am) I'll start the day with a couple of pieces of fibrous fruit (apples, pears) and then a really big bowl of All Bran. It's important to have lots of water following the All Bran to flush everything through. This usually gets things moving for me.

I second glycerin suppositories, they only act locally so shouldn’t add to any griping pains and usually work in approx 20 mins. Do expect a bit of diarrhea though once you’ve got rid of the ‘plug’ though after the laxatives you’ve taken.

UniversalTruth · 18/09/2022 11:22

Also recommended - lots of walking and a warm bath. Lie on your stomach in the bath, as hot as you can handle. Avoid eggs and bananas.

The best thing I’ve found for constipation is Ortis Fruit and Fibre cubes….one taken early evening with lots of water.
This seems to result in one regular bowel movement within about 30 minutes of getting up in the morning. No cramps! Find them in Holland and Barrett or you can buy from Amazon.

1 dulcolax works for me. Within hours. Kiwi and dates?

Hi any updates? I had an abdominal X-ray recently and the doc's secretary said I have colonic overload so I'm assuming it's this. I have also been suffering badly from constipation and am worried cuz I'm also on Nexium medication which I have to take for my gastritis.
