Does this sound like a thyroid problem?

Hi, just after advice after discussing with a friend some symptoms I’ve been having. I didn’t really make a connection between them but she thinks it points towards a thyroid issue. I’m planning to make a GP appointment on Monday.

My symptoms are

  • slow heart rate (45ish when resting, can go to 36 when asleep), which sometimes makes me feel light headed
  • really bad constipation to the point of having piles
  • Being totally exhausted that I could sleep standing
  • often weeks late on my periods
  • Finding unexplained bruises
  • scalloped tongue

I’m 36 and a single working mum to 2 DC so I thought the tiredness was normal. Bruises down to rough playing and constipation down to being dehydrated. Wasn’t until talking to my friend about my periods that she mentioned thyroid

I’ve had no weight gain which seems to be the major symptom when I googled it.

Will be making an appointment on Monday anyway but would be good to know whether it’s something to bring up before they start mentioning my age and menopause

Forgot to add that there are 6 different autoimmune conditions on my mum’s side of the family, affecting her and her siblings so wouldn’t be surprised if something autoimmune was going on

Could be but my main symptoms were:-

Unexplained weight gain
Exhaustion - like in early pregnancy
Constantly feeling bitterly cold
Severe constipation
Very brittle nails

However, hypothyroidism has loads of different symptoms and not everyone has all of them.

Hope you get to the bottom of your problem. If it is a thyroid issue - underactive - Thyroxine is brilliant for sorting it out.👍

Thank you

The exhaustion is exactly like early pregnancy. Was on the phone to my mum last night and honestly felt like I couldn’t say another word, it was too much effort

The scalloped tongue clinches it for me. Time to ask your GP for thyroid testing and also iron, ferritin, vitamins B12 and D and folate.

Thanks. It’s good to have an idea of what to ask for

Just updating for anyone having similar symptoms.

Phone consultation with GP this morning. Her first thought was under active thyroid so booked for ecg and bloods test tomorrow morning 😊
