What's your go to for a cold sore!

I got that tingling feeling of an incoming cold sore on Friday night, fast forward to today and half my bottom lip is covered in them. I usually just use moisturiser on them until they heal up but I really need these gone by Monday, or at least looking not as noticeable. I look like I have some contagious disease!

I never buy anything specific for them but maybe I should? All ideas welcome please!

I have oral acyclovir from the dr

curlyrebel · 10/09/2022 22:19

Zovirax at first tingle always works for me too

lilroo87 · 10/09/2022 22:21

Compeed patches are the best. Don't use anything else now.

Aftershave. Stings like buggery but it goes quick.

We've been using a vegan lemon balm lip balm we got on Amazon to try to prevent them. In terms of creams, we find Cymex the best.

Herpatherm has changed my life. It's 30 quid but lasts for years and I've gone from 6 coldsores a year to one every 2 years. Zap it at the tingle and it doesn't appear.

100% agree.

I'd also recommend buying generic acyclovir cream from a pharmacy instead of paying for branded Zovirax. You can use it while waiting for your Hepatherm to be delivered.

Acetone nail polish remover. Stings like hell but shrinks them down.

purpleboy · 10/09/2022 23:30

I suffer terribly with them, they get so large and scabby, I've used every cream recommended and it's never helped.
Last year I was on a cruise and one came up, I had nothing with me and the ship didn't have anything so I used Vaseline just to keep it moist, it turned out to be the best thing ever. It never fully came and as long as I kept the Vaseline on it all the time it was gone in under a week, but you couldn't even tell it was there. I've had about 10 in the past year and the Vaseline has worked 100% for all of them! It's saved me a fortune in bloody creams!

Nothing is going to work by Monday but for the future buy acyclovir tablets online on private prescription (Superdrug do them). They really work.

TeaTurtle · 10/09/2022 23:56

Ouch

Blistex - the normal ‘intensive moisturiser’ one, not the their cold sore cream. Works a treat and I find it usually stops them getting too bad and soothes the soreness if they have.

I use a generic acyclovir cream too alternating with blistex but find it does need to be newly opened not half leftover from months ago (they do say throw 6 weeks after opening so fair enough)

Compeed patches, especially at night

Fenistil cream (penciclovir) was the best for me but I can’t find it lately.

Zovirax cream as soon as I feel the tingle.

Same here. Been using it for years and only had one or two fully blown cold sores since then. The rest didn’t really come to anything.

lostintranslation78 · 11/09/2022 00:26

Dear fellow cold sore sufferers. Take lysine tablets. You will never have a cold sore again. I’d get them from feeling rundown, stress, excessive sunlight and sugar. Had three at once and was so miserable I looked all over the internet for solutions. I also have lip sunscreen but don’t need it because the lysine tablets have sorted me out.

FYI Before that it was Zovirax or pharmacy brand. Blistex and compeed were crap.
Honestly two of these a day will change your life.

I've just ordered a herpatherm, I get 4 or 5 cold sores a year, always around my nose and they last ages , even when the scab has gone I'm left with a red raised patch. I've tried all the creams and patches but none have worked so I'm very hopeful this will work.

Notaboutthebass · 11/09/2022 09:07

You're probably spreading them using moisturiser. Something with a high alcohol content like aftershave works for me, dries them out really quickly, stops them getting any bigger.

Neolara · 11/09/2022 09:12

I zap them with some special kind of light machine at the first tingle. I've no idea how it works, but since using it, the tingle has never developed into a cold sore.

Cosycover · 11/09/2022 09:13

Bonjela! Just normal bonjela. Works everytime.

ChickenGotLegs · 12/09/2022 16:54

Thanks for all the suggestions and apologies for just replying now. Ended up with a full blown head cold and feel like my head is about to fall off. I have taken note of some suggestions and will be purchasing some for next time!

The cold sores I managed to keep under slight control, no bursting and thankfully not as noticeable as I predicated they would be....my nose on the other hand resembles Rudolph! 😆
