Boost immune system whilst breast feeding?

Naboo · 22/01/2008 20:13

I'm desperate to boost my immune system, which seems to have been wrecked by child birth! I'm 100% breast feeding - which is taking it's toll a bit as i'm exhausted and thus run down.

Any suggestions which have helped you stay healthy? I am so sick of picking up every bug going, whilst trying to run my family ship! I'm broken - any ideas?

yep -echinacea is fantastic
Vitamin C
garlic (can take deodorised tablets)

a good multi vitamin (ie -not holland and barrett!)

superfoods like blue-green algae (doesn't taste bad in tablets - honest!!)

My bottle of echinacea says not to take it while bf, so have been studiously avoiding it for a year and coming down with every flippin bug that my two bring into the house.

I have found that lots of things say not to take it if you are pg/bf. I equate it to the "may contain nuts" on packaging thing, they seem to say it to cover their behinds, which ends up being unhelpful.
I figure that to get REAL info on herbs, see a herbalist/naturopath - people who do alot of study on herbs and their side effects. Seems like alot of medical people discourage herbs to err on the side of caution. Here is Napiers email - you can get some free advice

almonds. they are supposed to boost your immune system. also, they are full of calcium, so excellent for breastfeeding.

generally nuts of all descriptions are excellent. in pakistan etc, new mothers are traditionally given a mix of nuts and seeds to eat. tis said to help milk flow more easily, and provides various nutrients in one convenient package.

vitamin c, but if you can, get it from kiwi fruit, rather than a bottle
garlic, i'd say, get it from the actual garlic, rather than a tablet. cheaper, and less processed.
lots of different fruits and vegetables, and the nuts i have already mentioned.

DW is breastfeeding - DS reacts very strongly whenever she ate garlic or took garlic tablets - he refused the breast and won't eat and cried his head off. No problems now she has stopped eating it, so beware.

elderberry extract, and Kiki superfood supplement are both fantastic and worth every penny (neither are cheap but will last you, and the relief of feeling well again after months of being run down....)

Many thanks! it's been a mare the last few months; just picking up every bug going. With sleep deprivation in the bag too, i'm on my knees!

I did wonder if garlic might make baby fuss on breast. I'll have to up the anti on my fruit and veg!
