Casualty on the Beeb-

Feel rather surprised at Casualty this evening.Just witnessed a massive plug for the MMR vaccine.I am quite shocked by this.
What do mumsnetters think?

Yes ithink I am going through a naive phase at the moment.Usually I am quite cynical.But this was so blatant and unsubtle i was shocked.
Hopefully I will return to my cynical self soon.!

Boy arrived in Casualty with a temp.First thet thought it was an ear infection then he started fitting and they noticed koplick spots in his mouth(spelt wrong)and said it was measles.Then Maxwell Caulfield that rubbish actor from Grease 2 and the one that plays Harry both glared at the distraught mother and said 'did you have him immunised'?She said no as the information about it had been so confusing.Then Maxwell said you have now given your child an increased risk of brain damage,and he may die and there was a 75% statistic which i cannot rmember.
The mum spoke to Harry who said his wife had been reluctant to immunise his daughter but he talked to her and reassured her.He then said he was lucky because he had all the facts which was why he was happy for his dd to have the MMR.THEN Maxwell man said people like the mother made him sick as she had risked her sons life when he could have had a free innoculation and that wpeople in this country did not realise how lucky they were to have a free health service...That Is the gist of it anyway!

I don't think it was a plug - if they had had someone in as a patient who had had a bad reaction to mmr would it be ok for pro mmr mums to complain - imo there is no concrete evidence that mmr is bad dd had it and ds will be having it too and I wouldn't bat an eyelid at them showing a child with a bad reaction - they are never going to please everyone are they!!

That's a bit much isn't it? (the storyline, I mean). Both of my sons have had the MMR and that storline still annoys the cr*p out of me!

I agree that they are not going to please everyone and also agree that showing adverse reactions etc is not a bad thing to do in a drama but this was very badly done and really IMO came across as a crass plug and the programme makers sholud be ashamed of themselves-thats all.

Whilst i am personnally a fan of immunization I have to say that I think (my opinion) the vast majority of doctors who see situations like that little boy are quite likely to be cross to see that "he" could have been "saved" by the MMR...

Yeah i realised he was reacting to that.Casualty does tend to go for the in your face approach.I had not seen it for ages as it was starting to annoy me.
If presidential candidates put there campaign money towards healthcare in the good ole US OF A they might make inroads into their own health issues but i suspect that is another topic.
Anyway i am now going to read this decembers Marie Claire which my sister gave me.She is 10 years younger than me and i have not read a mag for yonks so i am quite excited.

mmmmmm, wonder if Casualty had come out adamantly anti vaccination, whether we would have all this sniping...

why can not a program plug something that actually saves lives... someone please state the FACTS and I mean FACTs that prove the MMR is dangerous - I have 2 kids that have had it and done tons of research and I don't mean reading the daily mail to check that these things are safe ..
