Why could blood tests for anaemia and thyroid function show "kidney problem"?

had blood tests done at hospital on Friday lunchtime and already GP's receptionist rang me by lunchtime today saying "nothing to worry about but..." and then booked me in to see GP tomorrow morning. What could they have picked up (so promptly I might add) from either of these tests? wasn't aware that either of them were anything to do with kidneys?

what makes you think it could be kidneys?

Blandmum · 21/01/2008 20:02

There is a hormone produced by the kidney (erythropoetin) that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells.

sorry, should have said the receptionist told me that's what they wanted to see me for.
Thanks MB so is this hormone a potential problem then?

Maybe there were other routine tests taken at the same time, and they have shown something? I believe some of the kidney function tests are urea and creatinine.

Good luck for tomorrow xx

I couldn't possibly say. I just know that kidney problems can sometimes cause anaemia. But it could have a much simpler explanation. I'd have a chat with the GP tomorrow.

If it is a problem with the hormone, it can be given in synthetic form....I used to work for the comapny that made it!

Tests for creatinine and urea (kidney function tests) are bog standard, ie often these will be taken along with any specific tests a Doctor wants done. Lots of things can throw them off. Also my Gp will always repeat a blood test even if its only very slightly out of range so please try not to wory too much right now.

Your Gp sounds on the ball tho!
