Right Breast Pain

Hi everyone,

I've been suffering with breast pain in my right breast for well over a year! I've been to the doctors twice, both times referred to the breast clinic, both times they did a physical examination and both times refused to scan me due to my age (28/29) at the time and because they felt nothing wrong.

However, it's ongoing. I get it every month, normally the week before my period and leading up to.. but it's agony. The side is so so tender to touch, and it can radiate into my shoulder too.
I get so paranoid every time it happens. After my period, it does ease off significantly but it's never completely fine!
At the breast clinic they told me it was the bras I was wearing, so I now only wear non-wired bras. I've tired evening primrose and the obvious heat compression and paracetamol/ibuprofen.

There isn't anything visually wrong - I check almost every day when it's particularly bad. No dimple. No irregular skin patterns, nipple is fine, no discharge. Just sore!!
When it's painful it can feel a-bit lumpy, but had read that's quiet normal around that sort of time of the menstrual cycle.
It's always the right breast too. Never the left.

Just wondering if anyone else suffers this? Any advice on relief??
It really ruins my life two weeks out of every month because it's so uncomfortable it genuinely makes me feel like sh*t.
I also find that my whole breast plate (running underneath the bottom of our boobs on both sides) often feels tender too.

I've no children - no breastfeeding - no Nipple piercings - no family history of breast cancer at all within the family - the only medication I take is mitazapine 45mg once a day which I've googled and seems to have no link to breast pain.

I know breast pain is quiet common and tends to be nothing to be urgently alarmed about. However I don't know another single person who gets it to the extent I do - so feel really alone with it which panics me even more....

It sounds hormonal and while unpleasant, nothing to worry about. I say this as someone who has had breast cancer.
I also was referred to the breast clinic with breast pain and they reassured me and gave bra advice. This was years ago and unrelated to my cancer.

Post surgery I have permanent breast pain and again I was told to get a better bra. I think I probably never took that original advice seriously because I'm pretty flat chested and couldn't see the benefit. The surgeon told me to wear a sports bra day and night (I don't).
However I have found one that makes a big difference. It's called a sloggi zero feel. Quite a snug fit and comfortable without feeling tight.

So when you first went did they not scan you ether and just put it down to bra?

I can't help my mind running away and making me think the worst. I'm only 29, but I'm in so much pain with my right boob and upper right arm so much, it doesn't seem normal to me.
I always bring it up with other women and none of them can relate. The most they say is 'they get a little tender at the start of my period but nothing drastically noticeable' nothing like what I'm explaining...
my right breast feels fat lumpier than my left and my left I experience no pain at all.

If you only get it in the lead up to your period it does sound hormonal. I had extremely painful shooting pains in my breasts when I was pregnant. It was like being jabbed by a red hot poker. I’ve also had random cycles where I’ve had extreme soreness and extreme lumpiness, felt like a bag of gravel. I must just have weird boobs.

You should try a high strength daily Evening Primrose Oil. I had painful breasts throughout my period times. I cannot believe your GP hasn’t recommended you to take this as it’s a readily known fact that EPO helps with this. It does take a couple of weeks to work, but it certainly helped me.

What strength would you recommend? It's honestly agony... for a week before my period right up until a few days in. And when it's every month, or rather every fortnight it really starts to effect you mentally and my mind triggers off the worst case scenarios. Just want it to stop...

I cannot remember but I did get high strength ones from Tesco which I took daily for a few years.

Hi OP, I know the post is older but having similar issue in my left boob and am panicking. I am only actually 24, went to the GP around a month ago, who said try primrose oil and come back in 3 months if still sore but she felt them and said felt fine. It’s just super uncomfortable in my outer boob going up to my armpit and feels sooo full, the pain has started to feel like a burning pain which is worrying me even more.
I just wondered if you ever got to the bottom on this?

Mrspepperpotsskirt · 17/12/2023 20:40

I’ve had this for years. Taking 1000mg star flower oil used to help but more recently the pain has returned… I’m following this with interest as been looking at supportive bras.

should add I’ve had scans & manograms & all ok.. so assumption is hormones though I’m post meno now.
