I can't get through to the GP (who can?!) and I'm weighing up the walk in centre. In the meantime, I'd like a mumsnet diagnosis please Grin

My symptoms are thus:

  • Quite sudden onset right-sided facial swelling. More in the cheekbone/ under eye area. It's got gradually worse throughout the day. Started about 9am when I felt a bit flushed at work.
  • Teeth don't appear to be affected but it is uncomfortable when opening my mouth
  • Some dull ache and throbbing along the cheekbone
  • a random ulcer has appeared on the right side top gum
  • a slight sore throat and a recent (in the last 30 mins) headache. Nothing major though
  • Feel generally well otherwise

I'm tempted to let it just go away by itself. The walk in centre will be rammed.

Cold/ hot compress and some ibuprofen?

I'd take ibuprofen and antihistamines and once your GP surgery has closed for the day ring 111 and see if they'll give you an out of hours appointment (IME they won't do this while your GP is still open even if they don't have any appointments and say you need to be seen today!)

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 16:54

@emmathedilemma antihistamine is a good shout. I'll try that. Good advice re 111. I'm not sure I do really need to be seen. I suppose if it doesn't go down tomorrow?

aye, if you're happy your breathing etc is ok and it's not getting any worse than maybe leave it until the morning before seeking medical advice.

cantthinkofabetterusername · 22/08/2022 17:01

Abscess?

livvyJ · 22/08/2022 17:02

I'd guess tooth abscess

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 17:08

I'm pretty sure it's not an abscess. I've had one before and the pain was awful. This is definitely more facial pain higher up along my cheekbone and around my eye. Aside from a random ulcer the inside of my mouth doesn't appear to be affected. I can eat as normal and open my mouth fine (albeit my cheek feels very tight).

OP posts:
BlackandJello · 22/08/2022 17:12

I had this, it was a tooth abcess. Unfortunately it only got worse overnight and the pain more excruciating. I needed antibiotics and a root canal to sort it.

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 17:15

I'm voting tooth too. My wisdom tooth was a dull ache for weeks

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 17:15

@BlackandJello oh hells bells! I'm not in pain as such. And it's been like this since about 9am. I've had a blocked salivary gland before which was similar with the swelling but a lot more painful.

OP posts:
BlackandJello · 22/08/2022 17:15

The abscess had spread from my upper tooth to my maxillary sinus' hence the cheek swelling and eye pain. The pain didn't kick it properly til the next day. Sorry!

EmmaH2022 · 22/08/2022 17:18

I got sent home from work once after my face swelled up on one side. Boss told me to see doc asap

few hours later, I knew what it was - ear infection.

yours seems more likely be tooth but sounds like meds needed, you need to see a doc, sorry. Wish you better asap.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 22/08/2022 17:18

Sinusitis maybe try some Sudafed nasal spray

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 17:22

@emmathedilemma thank you! It's funny you mention ears. This sore throat is more towards my ear if that makes sense and that is getting worse. Face ache and swelling seems to be stable at the moment

Provisional diagnosis:
Most likely -Dental problems
But also >
Sinusitis
Shingles
Periorobital cellulitis with coincidental mouth ulcer

Teenprobs · 22/08/2022 17:47

My vote is infection under a bit of skin from impacted wisdom tooth x

Greengreengrassbluebluesky · 22/08/2022 17:49

Oh yes possibly shingles. I had a swollen face and a couple of spots near my eye.

BoneyEmm · 22/08/2022 17:52

If it weren't for the mouth ulcer , I'd say it was a sinus infection, one of your sinuses is below your eye.

Either way I would say tomorrow should be fine and hope u manage to get some sleep in the meantime.

You could try some sinus remedies, even if it ends up something else

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 17:54

Those of you saying shingles might be onto something. I had a very rare complication from shingles about 7 years ago: Ramsey Hunt Syndrome. It was left sided and I have residual nerve damage around my temple.

Could it recur on the other side?! I hope not. I was dreadfully poorly

OP posts:
bloodywhitecat · 22/08/2022 17:54

I have a root from a tooth that grows up into my sinus cavity, when it got infected I had symptoms like yours.

Wrong Emma 😂
but yes, you will need antibiotics though. Is there any way you can be seen?

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 18:07

Oops sorry! @EmmaH2022 and @BoneyEmm! Busy making burgers for tea - so my appetite is fine!

I work in a hospital so I'll get someone to see me tomorrow if it's not urgent I go tonight!

Someone on here only the other day had similar and thought it wasn't a tooth abscess but it was. Obviously, that doesn't mean yours is but....

You can get ocular / facial shingles (zoster) again but it doesn't follow that you'll develop RH syndrome.

deflatedbirthday · 22/08/2022 23:23

An update for those interested...

I'm 90% sure it's a recurrence of Ramsey Hunt. DH said it was the same side and he was right (I had to take photos for the GP to track the swelling). It's five years ago since I had it.

My face is getting hotter on one side, my lip is starting to droop a bit, my eye is sore and I have a rash appearing along my cheek bone.

Steroids for me tomorrow!

I hope you're right op and that you start to feel better soon. Sounds miserable.
