Irregular periods when first starting

My daughter started her period age 10y8m, she's now 12y3m. In that time no cycle has been the same length and they have been anything and everything from 14-49 days. She is already under endocrinology as she started her period quite young so we have another appointment in a few months. At her last checkup including blood tests and an ultrasound, the consultant said we could look into the pill to help her regulate once she's had a good couple of years to see what happens first. I don't want her to be on the pill yet and though I know it's normal to be irregular at the onset, hers are so wildly irregular it stresses her out that she may be caught short. (Thank god for modibodi). Has anyone else got experience of their daughters irregularity? Was it just a bit irregular but sorted itself out after a few months? Or like my dd where we're nearing 2 years and she's never had two cycles the same.

I was late starting my periods (14). And they were irregular until I was 18 and then it sorted its self out. I wouldn’t put her on the pill at that age due to the side affects. I thought it was quite normal at the time and I didn’t put much thought into it. Is she underweight at all?

She's 5'6 and 6st 12. Nhs bmi puts her at 3rd centile for weight but just about in healthy range. Consultant has never been concerned about her weight.

DD started quite late at 14, and then didn’t have another period for almost a year after that. She’d go months without having one until she was about 17. Now 18 and fully regular so it has come with time!

My DD went on pill at 15 as periods started when she was 14 but were very irregular and prolonged. Like 16 days and substantial bleeding. She couldn't cope at school having to go to the loo for ages every day. And never knowing when it would stop or start. She's had no side effects.

@Felicity42 I'd be happy for my dd to have it at 15 if need be but she's only 12 so will see what the consultant advises for now
