Does this look like tonsillitis / strep throat

Sorry rubbish photos - one supposed to show back of throat and grey tongue. Other one three white spots in back left of throat.
Late Teen DS has had really sore throat last few days. Very difficult to eat / sleep etc. Says feels like broken glass. Very tired etc. Taken ibuprofen.

No face to face appointment available at drs but he's had a video consult via the local walk in centre and been prescribed penicillin V. Problem is he can't remember what the dr said so no idea what they think it is.

It's not something he's prone to but I've got him to gargle warm
Salt water. Any other tips. It's unlike him to be ill.

This shows the white patches a bit better at back of throat. Lymph nodes are swollen too.

If he's got an antibiotic, it's tonsillitis. Hope he recovers quickly.

juniperjewel · 17/08/2022 21:51

Thank you - that's useful to know

Paracetamol too for the pain.
Alternate the Brufen with the paracetamol so he has good levels of pain relief in his system.
Write down the time the medication given do
ypu can accurately time it. ( plus I always forget when last had tablets!)
Ice pops, iced water, ice cream will soothe his throat and get fluids into him.

Thanks for reminder about alternating the ibuprofen with paracetamol - hopefully the antibiotics will start to kick in soon. He'll have been taking them for 48 hours by tomorrow morning.

He's had 3 full days of antibiotics now but not feeling any better. Struggling to eat. Was very dizzy earlier. Still in pain with ibuprofen / paracetamol - and v strong pain when they start to wear off. Using Difflam spray too.
Just wondering how long it should take for antibiotics to start to work ?
Concerned but don't want to bother GP again unnecessarily.

I think you should contact the GP. my DD had tonsilitis recently and she felt much better within 24hours.

Thanks @teraculum29 - was that with antibiotics ?

I had strep throat as a teenager and it certainly looks like it, pale/yellow tongue and white spots in the throat.

I think I also lost my sense of taste and obviously throat was sore.

juniperjewel · 18/08/2022 21:12

@ChobKnees did it just clear on its own in end ?

Yes I think so from memory. I gargled warm salt water a few times every day.

Tonkerbea · 18/08/2022 22:34

Check his throat again, just in case he's developed quinsy.

Gensola · 18/08/2022 22:37

I have had tonsillitis 3 times this year - due to have them out soon. the first bout I had it did take 3-4 days of antibiotics to start feeling better. It was absolutely miserable, your poor DS. Hopefully another 24 hours will see him right but I would call GP tomorrow anyway.

juniperjewel · 19/08/2022 08:41

Thanks for all the comments - has been checked by nurse just now after 111 said worth him being seen. Keep taking antibiotics etc (they checked re quinsy and told us what to look for.)
Still very painful this morning. Can't remember if I already said but I got the Difflam spray too.
Hoping he starts to feel brighter soon.

yes, with antibiotics.
She had first dose on Fri evening, then next 3 on Sat, and on Sunday it was much better.
Obviously we finished the antibiotic course as prescribed.

barbieVSdinosaur · 20/08/2022 14:03

How is he OP?

juniperjewel · 22/08/2022 22:32

Thanks for asking @barbieVSdinosaur
The antibiotics seemed to start kicking in yesterday. Still tired etc but the pain is significantly reduced now. Interesting that it took a good 5 days to see any improvement from them.
(Unless it was viral and the anti biotics didn't actually do anything. I guess we'll never know.)

Good to hear he is on the mend
